Stephen Cookc Steven Smith b Mitchell Starc 40 99 4 0 40.4
32.1
M Starc to S Cook, OUT! Starc gets rid of Cook and once again he checks behind to see if it is a no ball! On a length outside off, Cook feels for it away from his body and gets an outside edge and Smith at second slip gobbles the catch. Cook does not make the Australians pay and he departs after a start. There was no need to play at that but Cook was very loose there.
Dean Elgarc Usman Khawaja b Mitchell Starc 5 17 1 0 29.41
6.5
M Starc to Elgar, OUT! Starc is looking back to check if it is a no ball or not! Bowls it outside off, Elgar pokes at it from his crease. He gets an outside edge that carries to Usman Khawja at third slip. Starc is pumped up and why not, finally Australia have a wicket. Elgar walks back disappointed, he was pushing at that one with hard hands.
Hashim Amlac Matthew Renshaw b Josh Hazlewood 5 11 0 0 45.45
12.1
J Hazlewood to H Amla, OUT! Good grab, Renshaw! Hazlewood bowls it on a length outside off, the ball pitches and goes away just a touch. Amla has to play at it and gets an outside edge which flies to the right of Matt Renshaw who dives to his right and takes a good catch. Amla has another failure, Hazlewood has one to his name too. Australia are now bowling the right lines and lengths.
JP Duminyc Matthew Wade b Josh Hazlewood 5 11 1 0 45.45
14.5
Hazlewood to Duminy, OUT! Edged...and gone! Another huge blow dealt by Hazlewood. Full and outside off, a hint of shape inward as Duminy goes for the drive. Gets a faint inside edge that settles nicely into Wade's gloves. The morning continues to get better for the Aussies as the in-form JP departs.
Faf du Plessis (C)not out 118 164 17 0 71.95
Temba Bavumac Matthew Wade b Jackson Bird 8 34 0 0 23.53
42.1
J Bird to Bavuma, OUT! A tame poke does Bavuma in! Good length outside off, Bavuma defends it from his crease but gets an outside edge that goes through to the keeper for a simple catch. Bavuma was beaten by the late away movement. Australia have South Africa on the mat here, will they make it count from here on?
Quinton de Kock (W)c Matthew Wade b Josh Hazlewood 24 33 3 0 72.73
50.3
J Hazlewood to Kock, OUT! Hazlewood has another! This is a huge wicket too, considering de Kock's ominous form. Length ball on middle and leg, nips away off the seam as Quinton pushes tentatively at it. The outside edge flies through to Wade who takes another comfortable catch. The Australians getting timely strikes.
Vernon Philanderc Matthew Wade b Josh Hazlewood 4 9 1 0 44.44
52.6
J Hazlewood to Philander, OUT! PHILANDER HAS TO GO! Have to admit it was a very debatable decision. Back of a length around off, nips back in sharply, Philander hangs back to fend at it as the ball goes off the pads. It lobs high towards Wade who collects it with glee. The Australians feel there is a faint inside edge and the umpire obliges to the appeal as well. Vernon immediately goes for the review. Looked like it came off the back thigh although Snicko does show a very slight spike. Nothing on Hot Spot. The third umpire reckons it could be the faintest of inside edges. So, the on-field call is upheld and Philander has to go. This call may ignite a controversy probably. Australia on a roll at the moment. Hazlewood has four now.
Kyle Abbottlbw b Jackson Bird 17 50 0 0 34
67.6
J Bird to Abbott, OUT! PLUMB! One ball that is hitting the stumps and Abbott has to walk back. Fuller outside off, middle, comes in a touch, Abbott looks to clip it through but is rapped on the pads. The players go up in an appeal and the umpire upholds it. Abbott comes over to have a chat with Faf who informs him that that was pretty adjacent and hence Abbott does not review. A wicket at last for Australia in the session.
Kagiso Rabadast Matthew Wade b Nathan Lyon 1 6 0 0 16.67
70.1
N Lyon to Rabada, OUT! SHARP STUFF FROM WADE! This was a floated off break around off, Rabada lunged into it to block but the ball whizzes past the outside edge. He slightly overbalances and Wade was quick to whip off the bails. They go upstairs and replays confirm that Kagiso doesn't have any part of the foot behind the line. Lyon is a relieved man, a Test wicket after almost 110 overs i.e. three innings.

Usman Khawajalbw b Vernon Philander 145 308 12 0 47.08
108.5
Philander to Khawaja, OUT! PHILANDER STRIKES! Good length on off, tails in a touch to rap Khawaja on the front pad before hitting the back pad as well. Looked very plumb and the umpire's finger went up almost as soon as the lbw appeal started. Khawaja gambles with the review, more as a punt than anything else. No bat involved and Hawk Eye shows it hitting middle and off. Ends a marathon knock from Khawaja, gets a standing ovation from the crowd. Deservingly so. Timely strike for the Proteas and the one that they needed too. Lead is 68.
Matthew Renshawc Dean Elgar b Kyle Abbott 10 46 2 0 21.74
15.3
K Abbott to Renshaw, OUT! ABBOTT STRIKES! Length ball closer to off, seaming away, Renshaw plays at it with an angled bat. Once again gets an edge and this time it carries low to Elgar who takes it smartly at third slip. The umpires want to check it upstairs if the catch is clean. Soft signal is out and looks to be a fair catch from the replays too. At least, there isn't any evidence to suggest that it's a bump ball. So, the on-field call stays and the debutant's honeymoon is over.
David Warnerc Dean Elgar b Kyle Abbott 11 25 0 0 44
21.6
K Abbott to D Warner, OUT! WARNER DEPARTS! Abbott is on fire. Good length around off, seaming away late, Warner is forced into that typical poke of his with zero footwork. Gets a thick edge that flies comfortably to Elgar at third slip. This is a fairly easier chance compared to the Renshaw dismissal and Elgar gobbled it up. Huge blow for the Aussies and they are looking shaky once again.
Steven Smith (C)run out (Vernon Philander) 59 113 8 1 52.21
60.6
T Shamsi to Smith, OUT! CONFUSION AND SMITH GOES! What a waste of a wicket but South Africa won't mind it at all. Just what the tourists wanted. Floated on off, Smith pushes at it but the ball goes off the outer half to the off side. Wanted the single but Khawaja is hesitant from the start. Too late for Smith to return and he is not even in the frame as de Kock collects Philander's throw to whip off the bails. Huge wicket for the Proteas and a timely one as well. Smith is fuming as he walks off.
Peter Handscombb Kyle Abbott 54 78 6 0 69.23
86.1
K Abbott to Handscomb, OUT! THAT'S A PEACH AND ABBOTT strikes! The youngster departs after a breezy knock! Bowls it well outside off on a good length, gets it to jag back in sharply. Handscomb with minimal foot movement is stuck in the crease and the ball crashes through his defence and castles the stumps. It has been a superb knock from the youngster and he has shown the way ahead for the Australians.
Nic Maddinsonb Kagiso Rabada 0 12 0 0 0
89.5
K Rabada to Maddinson, OUT! BEATS HIM FOR PACE THERE! He was looking very uncomfortable there and his short stay in the crease comes to an end. Bowls a yorker length ball on middle, Maddinson's feet is going nowhere and the ball sneaks under his bat and crashes into the middle stump. Rabada is pumped up and he sledges Maddinson as he goes back. There might have been an exchange of words between the two earlier. Good comeback by South Africa.
Matthew Wade (W)c Quinton de Kock b Vernon Philander 4 6 1 0 66.67
90.5
V Philander to Wade, OUT! PHILANDER IS MAKING THE BALL TALK! Gets rid of Wade with a good one. Bowls a fuller length ball around off, shapes away substantially. Wade reaches out for it and gets an outside edge and it flies towards the keeper. De Kock takes the regulation catch with ease. Australia lead by 24 now.
Mitchell Starcc & b Kagiso Rabada 53 91 5 1 58.24
115.1
Rabada to Starc, OUT! Starc gone first ball after drinks break! How many times this has happened now? Starc probably loses his concentration and just chips a fuller length ball back to Rabada. Easy catch taken by the South African speedster in his follow through. Australia lead by 98 runs. How many more can they add?
Josh Hazlewoodnot out 11 26 1 0 42.31
Nathan Lyonc Hashim Amla b Tabraiz Shamsi 13 8 1 0 162.5
116.3
T Shamsi to Lyon, OUT! Shamsi gets his maiden Test wicket! On middle and leg, Lyon goes for the sweep yet again but gets a faint top edge that brushes the pad and lobs up behind. Amla goes to his left from first slip and takes the catch. Lyon starts walking straightaway and Shamsi has just a smile on his face, reckon he can celebrate it a bit more as this is his first ever Test wicket. Australia lose their ninth wicket, lead by 111 runs.
Jackson Birdc Faf du Plessis b Kagiso Rabada 6 17 0 0 35.29
121.1
K Rabada to Bird, OUT! EDGED AND GONE! Back of a length ball outside off, Bird slashes at it. The ball goes off the outside edge and straight into the hands of du Plessis at second slip. Easy catch there and that is it. Australia are all out for 383, get a lead of 124 runs. Rabada finishes with three wickets.

Starc to S Cook, OUT! Gone! What a ball to bowl to a centurion! Beautiful inswinger on off, gets through Cook's defences to disturb the timber. Special delivery to end what has been a special innings regardless of the method employed. AUSTRALIA NEED 127 RUNS TO WIN.
Dean Elgarc Steven Smith b Mitchell Starc 0 3 0 0 0
0.5
M Starc to D Elgar, OUT! STARC DRAWS FIRST BLOOD! What a start for Australia! Fullish and angled in closer to off, squares up Elgar as the outside edge flies to second slip. Smith, stationed there, takes a very good diving catch to his left. South Africa have been rocked early as Elgar goes for a duck.
Hashim Amlac Matthew Wade b Josh Hazlewood 45 80 6 1 56.25
25.6
J Hazlewood to Amla, OUT! HAZLEWOOD STRIKES! He has become a bunny of Hazlewood now. On a length outside off angling in at first but straightens a touch to get Amla into a bit of a tangle. He has no choice but to play at it and gets a faint nick onto his back pad and flies towards the keeper. He takes a regulation catch. Amla goes for the review straightaway. Hotspot spots just a faint nick on the bat and that's enough. The on-field call stays and Amla has to depart. It was a good knock but falls to a beauty! South Africa trail by 42.
JP Duminyb Nathan Lyon 26 70 4 0 37.14
48.4
N Lyon to JP Duminy, OUT! BOWLED 'EM! What a strike for Australia! Slider around off, Duminy sits back and tries to work it across the line but it skids off the deck to disturb the timber. The off stump has been ripped out! Wrong shot selection to be honest especially considering that Lyon was getting some purchase. JP knows it too and is disappointed as he makes the walk back. Timely strike for the Aussies. Lead is 7.
Faf du Plessis (C)c Peter Handscomb b Mitchell Starc 12 26 2 0 46.15
57.1
M Starc to Plessis, OUT! FAF DEPARTS! Starc deals a big blow to SA. Full and angled away from outside off, Faf drives away from his body and gets a thick edge that is snapped up sharply by Handscomb at gully. Huge moment in this match as the SA skipper was once again looking in good touch. Will this open the floodgates for Australia? SA lead by 30.
Temba Bavumac Steven Smith b Nathan Lyon 21 31 3 0 67.74
66.4
N Lyon to Bavuma, OUT! GOT HIM! Lyon nips out a vital strike at the fag end of the day. Floated outside off, not really a wise shot from Bavuma as he goes for an expansive sweep shot. The ball lobs high to the left of Wade. Smith from first slip runs across to his left to take it. The appeal for a catch is given by the umpire. Bavuma decides to review it after a chat with Cook. Hot Spot detects a slight top edge after which the ball hit the forearm before lobbing up in the air. So, the on-field call stays and South Africa have lost half their side now. Lead is 66.
Kyle Abbottlbw b Nathan Lyon 0 5 0 0 0
68.3
Lyon to Abbott, OUT! LYON HAS ANOTHER! Oh boy, what a finish to the day this is turning out to be for Australia. Floated around middle, turns in to rap Abbott on the front pad. Massive lbw appeal and it's given by the umpire. SA have no reviews left and so that's another blow to the tourists. Looked close to the naked eye anyway. Lead is now 70.
Quinton de Kock (W)lbw b Jackson Bird 5 16 1 0 31.25
73.1
Bird to Kock, OUT! BOWLING CHANGE WORKS! What a huge wicket! Length ball angling away on middle and leg, straightens ever so slightly to rap de Kock on the pads. Loud lbw appeal but not given by the umpire. Smith decides to review this. Looked very plumb but where was it pitching? No bat involved on it. Hawk Eye shows it's pitching in line and hitting middle and off. De Kock has to go and this is a huge blow to the tourists. Lead is now 77.
Vernon Philanderlbw b Mitchell Starc 17 34 2 0 50
81.6
M Starc to Philander, OUT! STARC NAILS IT! A typical wicket for him this is as the full inswinger tails in from middle to rap Philander on the front pad. The lbw appeal is given instantly by the umpire. Philander decides to try his luck with the review. No bat involved and Hawk Eye shows it crashing into middle and leg. Cook is running out of partners. The lead is 111.
Kagiso Rabadac Matthew Wade b Josh Hazlewood 7 9 1 0 77.78
84.5
J Hazlewood to Rabada, OUT! RABADA DEPARTS! Shortish around leg stump, Rabada swivels to pull as it goes down the leg side. Wade dives to his right to take a good catch. Rabada has got some glove on that and up goes the umpire's finger. Another wicket for Hazlewood and the Aussies are close to wrapping this up. Lead is now 126.

T Shamsi to Warner, OUT! Warner is run out and it's Temba Bavuma yet again! Shortish outside off, Warner half-pulls it towards mid-wicket and sets off. There is a fielder though and Warner is halfway down the track but Renshaw says no. Bavuma quickly collects the ball and throws it at the striker's end where Warner fails to make it back. South Africa finally get a breakthrough. Honestly, didn't look like there was a run.

T Shamsi to Khawaja, OUT! LBW! Decision overturned! Khawaja is gone for a duck! On middle and off, Khawaja looks to play it off his front foot but misses and gets hit on the pads. Big appeal for a leg before and umpire Llong says not out. South Africa take a review and replays show the ball would have hit the leg stump so that's out. The umpire overturns the decision and South Africa sneak through another quick wicket. First innings centurion gone a for a duck.

K Abbott to Smith, OUT! Gone! Ripper of a ball and the Australian captain has to go. Back of a length around off, moves away sharply as Smith looks to play across the line. The feather flies through to de Kock who takes it with ease. So, Smith has to go with his side at the doorstep of a win.
