South Africa beat England by 340 runs | England Vs South Africa 2nd Test match
More...
So that's it from us for this game. We hope you enjoyed our coverage. This series is now up and alive thanks to the visitors. The coming two Tests will be good ones, hopefully. The third Test starts from July 27, 2017. Action begins at 1100 local (1000 GMT). We look forward to your company. Until then, it's goodbye and take care.
96.1 was the overs faced by England in this Test - The last time they faced less than 100 overs in a home Test, getting all-out in both inns, was at Headingley in Ashes 2009. Just sums up the dismal performance put in by them.
VERNON PHILANDER (MAN OF THE MATCH) admits that they were all disappointed after the Lord's defeat and were determined to put their hands up in this game. Opines that he was a bit gingerly in the first Test after coming from an injury and reveals that he felt better in this game. Says happily that he always relishes bowling to left-handers, which England had plenty of. Feels that the ploy of playing an extra bowler eased his workload as a bowler although he had more responsibility with the bat. Nevertheless, states that he enjoyed it. Lauds Morne Morkel for his spirited spells and praises the bowlers for a collective effort. Also has a word of praise for the batsmen, especially on day one when conditions were tricky. Ends by saying that it was a perfect team effort by South Africa.
FAF DU PLESSIS feels that they did their basics better and put England under pressure for longer period of time. Mentions that they wanted to do well for the coach who flew home after his mother passed away. They wanted to do it for him. Opines that they focused on the things that worked for them before. He feels that they let England dominate them in the first Test so they aimed to change that around. Is happy that they did not let up of the intensity. Credits Amla and Kuhn's partnership in the first innings, Morkel for his bowling throughout the game. Lauds Maharaj's effort since he never go of the control he had. On the long break, he is happy that players will get time away from the game and be fresh for the next Test.
JOE ROOT feels that it's been contrasting emotions in the last two weeks for his team. Hopes that they can turn things around quickly. Cites South Africa's turnaround as an example for his side to follow in the next game. Admits that the loss is difficult to explain and says that perhaps South Africa adapted to conditions better. The nature of the capitulation today does disappoint him but he feels that they will bounce back from it. Doesn't feel there are too many concerns about the top order and expects them to fire soon. Accepts that Wood's figures haven't been great but states that he cannot fault the pacer's commitment. Accepts that England is a side with flaws and wants them to improve them as soon as possible.
The Englishmen who like to play their shots found out that while they can pull it off in colored clothing, Test cricket demands more respect and application from the batsmen. With no appetite for a fight, they were rolled over for 133 in the second innings. Vernon Philander was once again the man who led the way with a 3-wicket haul. He was well backed up by Keshav Maharaj, who looks innocuous but packs a punch.
Hashim Amla and Quinton de Kock led the way with the bat to help them post a massive total. Yes, James Anderson took another five-wicket haul but that was all that went England's way. South African bowlers hunted them down in packs to take a 130-run lead. Fifties for Amla, Dean Elgar, Faf du Plessis and Vernon Philander ensured that hosts were chasing a massive total.
Faf du Plessis returns, South Africa return and they have leveled the series at Trent Bridge inflicting the biggest loss on England at this ground. What an inspirational leader he is and in just a matter of days he has turned things around for his side. It was a brave call to bat first and it shows how confidence rubs off on the players.
10 wickets down for ENG. Out batsman is James Anderson. It is all over for ENG. 44.2Duanne Olivier to James Anderson. out, OUT! All over! Banged in short and outside off, Anderson has a tame poke at it and only manages to get an outside edge to the keeper for a simple catch. Olivier has two wickets to show but what a game for the visitors. SOUTH AFRICA WIN BY 340 RUNS!
James Anderson is the last man in.
44.1Duanne Olivier to Mark Wood. out, OUT! Easy as you like! Shorter in length from Olivier on the body of Wood. Mark is taken back by the bounce, he looks to fend it but the ball gets big on him and goes off the face of the bat to Morris at gully for a simple catch. Wood gets a golden duck and Olivier has a wicket to his name. South Africa a wicket away!
Duanne Olivier brought back on for a bowl. He has had the least of the work to do. Can he clean up the tail?
End of over 44 ( 3 Runs )ENG 133/8 Liam Dawson* 5(13)Mark Wood 0(0) 43.6Keshav Maharaj to Liam Dawson. no run, Floats it around middle, Dawson comes forward and defends it.
Mark Wood comes out to bat. Penultimate man in.
3 wickets for Keshav Maharaj. Keshav Maharaj is on a roll. 3 wickets for Keshav Maharaj. Keshav Maharaj is on a roll. 43.5Keshav Maharaj to Stuart Broad. out, OUT! One more throws it away! Bowls it outside off, Broad wants to go big. He looks to go big over mid-wicket but he has not hit that well. Morkel in the deep has the easiest of catches to take. Must laud England for the ease with which they have found the fielders.
43.4Keshav Maharaj to Stuart Broad. no run, Floats it around off, Broad shapes to defend but gets an inside edge onto his pads.
43.3Keshav Maharaj to Liam Dawson. 1 run, Dawson now sweeps one through backward square leg for a single.
43.2Keshav Maharaj to Stuart Broad. 1 run, Gets across and paddles this down towards fine leg for a single.
Something has gone into the eyes of Broad and he makes Maharaj stop in his delivery stride.
43.1Keshav Maharaj to Liam Dawson. 1 run, Floats it around off, driven to long off for a single by Dawson.
