England Captain Alastair Cook broke Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar‘s long standing record for being the youngest player to score 8,000 Test runs en route to his fluent half-century in the fourth Ashes Test in Melbourne.
Cook, who turned 29 on Christmas day is overseeing his side get decimated by the Australians and are in danger of going 0-4 down on Sunday.
Cook crossed the 8,000th-run mark with three runs off Peter Siddle’s bowling towards square on the leg side in the second innings of the fourth Test on Day Three.
The southpaw now needs less than 900 runs to end up as England’s highest run getter of all time.
Graham Gooch is at the top of the table with 8,900 from 118 matches. Cook is playing his 101st match.
