Karnataka‘s wicketkeeper CM Gautam, elated by the Ranji Trophy victory over Maharashtra said he was delighted to win back the Ranji Trophy for the southern state after 15 years and mentioned that he wanted to dedicate the victory to the team management, whom he said were hurt by the 2009 loss to Mumbai by six runs.
Karnataka won their seventh Ranji Trophy title by beating Maharashtra by seven wickets in the final at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad.
Both teams made it into the final of the Ranji Trophy 2013-14 by virtue of remarkable team-work, with many players raising the bar this season. However, Karnataka outclassed Maharashtra by virtue of one day that helped them surge ahead in the contest. It is is undoubtedly a great victory for Karnataka, and one mustn’t forget the remarkable effort put in by Maharashtra throughout the season.
Maharashtra did not play badly, save for one day i.e. Day Two. However, they would blame themselves for their predicament. Firstly, Ankit Bawne’s 89 on Day One had taken them to 272 for five, a reasonable score from where they could have pushed towards a good score. But, once Bawne was dismissed off the first ball he faced on Day Two; Abhimanyu Mithun beating him with a delivery that prodigiously came in, the wheels came off for Maharashtra. They lost their last five wickets for 33 runs on Day Two and were bowled out for only 305.
