England Women vs India Women 2014, 1st ODI at Scarborough: Video Highlights

The good first-wicket partnership between skipper Charlotte Edwards and Heather Knight, guided England Women to a 42- run (duckworth-lewis) victory over India Women in the first One-Day International (ODI) at Scarborough.

Match was cut short by incessant showers. The target was 112 runs at 30.1 overs, but England Women had already crossed the margin, before rain halted the match. Charlotte scored 57 before she played on a delivery by Ekta Bisht. However, her partner Heather Knight, who had a good bowling show, continued to play.

After Charlotte’s dismissal, vice-captain Heather continued with Sarah Taylor. Heather was soon dismissed by Shivaanad Rajeshwari. She scored 53.

Sarah Taylor was not out on 20 from 24 balls. Earlier, Smriti Mandhana‘s 74 helped India Women reach a moderate total of 193 for the loss of eight wickets in 47 overs against England Women at Scarborough. England Women bowlers put up a great show, as Anya Shrubsole and Heather Knight restricted the India Women through out the match.

While the England Women started well with a couple of early dismissals, the Indian batswomen managed to claw the game back into their favour by putting up a 64-run partnership. That however, was the only bright moment in the Indian innings as England Women managed to take quite a few wickets towards the end of the game.

England Women won the toss and elected to field. Charlotte’s decision came as the weather at Scarborough had been cold and chilly this morning.

India made a slow start but Anya Shrubsole hit the right chord as she removed Thirush Kamini and Karuna Jain well within six overs. India were 18 for the loss of two wickets, when rain halted the proceedings of the match for the first time.

However, play resumed very soon. The second session of India’s innings belonged to the visitors. Mithali Raj and Smriti Mandhana were going good as rain halted play again. Just after play resumed, Jenny Gunn removed experienced and settled Mithali Raj. She scored 34 from 59 which included five boundaries. India were soon 77 for the loss of three.

Harmanpreet Kaur was the next batswoman to come in; she took eight balls to open her account. Harmanpreet played some hideous shot. She held her spot with Smriti. However, a poor delivery by Heather Knight was played even more poorly by Harmanpreet Kaur as she was caught at leg slip by Charlotte Edwards.

Vellaswamy Vanitha was the next batswoman. She took eight balls to open her account. However, she took very less time after that to progress. By that time, Smriti decided to open up and bat aggressively.

Anya was welcomed by nine runs when she was called back by skipper Charlotte. Vanitha also kept on putting pressure on the England Women, by hitting boundaries in between singles.

Although, a poor call by the duo resulted in Smriti losing her wicket, as she was run out by Jenny Gunn. She scored 74 off 99 balls, which included eight boundaries.

India soon lost two more quick wickets, as Jhulan Goswami was run out by Jenny Gunn and Vanitha was caught behind by Sarah Taylor. She scored 27 from 37.

Heather Knight was the pick of the bowlers, as she removed Harmanpreet Kaur, Vellaswamy Vanitha and Nagarajan Niranjana.

A little cameo by Shikha Pandey and Ekta Bisht came in handy for the visitors in the end.

Brief scores:

India Women 193 for 8 in 47 overs (Smriti Mandhana 74, Mithali Raj 34, Vellaswamy Vanitha 27; Anya Shrubsole 2 for 47, Heather Knight 3 for 28) lost to England Women 153 for 3 in 30.1 overs (Charlotte Edwards 57, Heather Knight 53; Ekta Bisht 1 for 20, Shivanand Rajeshwari 1 for 17) by 42 runs (D/L method).
