Sohaib Maqsood‘s unbeaten 89 from 73 balls and Shahid Afridi‘s boundary on the penultimate ball of the match helped Pakistan snatch a thrilling win against Sri Lanka at Hambantota in the first One-Day International on Saturday. Chasing 275 in 45 overs, Pakistan stuttered with the middle-order failing to hold the innings together.
Ahmed Shehzad was the backbone of the chase. He accumulated the singles and also found the boundaries to keep the pressure at bay. He was gone for a soft dismissal when Perera bowled him when the batsman tried to shuffle across a bit. But Maqsood and Fawad Alam helped Pakistan recover and lead the team’s daunting chase.
Sri Lanka’s innings was set by a fifty from Mahela Jayawardene and a 15-ball 39 from Ashan Priyanjan towards the end. Skipper Angelo Mathews was the highest scorer with 89.
