West Indies skipper Brian Lara won the toss and put England in to bat. Opener Marcus Trescothick led the charge with a fluent century with lower-order batsman Ashley Giles contributing 31 to take the England total to 217. West Indian didn’t start too well and lost quick wickets to keep England in the game. Shivnarine Chanderpaul played a fighting knock of 47 as the England bowlers chipped away at the wickets. West Indies were struggling at 147 for eight in the 34th over with England just two wickets away from the title win. Tailenders Courtney Browne and Ian Bradshaw starred in a 71-run partnership to eke out a title win out of nowhere.
Courtney Browne and No 10 Bradshaw had the resilience. England bowlers had to pick up their wickets. However, the duo matched shot per shot. Bradshaw sent one through the off-side for a boundary, while Browne executed a belligerent drive past backward point.
The duo got the required runs under 50 and soon they brought up a partnership of 50 together. Needing nine from 10, Alex Wharf bowled a length delivery to Browne, who sliced the ball over point for a four. Needing four to win, Bradshaw played a square drive which went for a four. Bradshaw pumped his fist as Browne hugged him. Their teammates came running on the ground. There was an ecstasy as the players were hugging, kissing and screaming in joy. There was also a sense of bafflement. This was a victory to savour for years to come.
