Cricket Australia (CA) fast-forwarded Harbhajan Singh’s Australian citizenship formalities to include him in the Ashes Test squad which lacks a quality spinner. This decision was announced by CA Chief James Sutherland late on Monday. After sacking coach Mickey Arthur, the move to include Harbhajan in the Ashes squad shows the desperate measures CA is taking to win the Ashes.

“Harbhajan is world-class bowler. We finally have a spinner who can generate more movement than our swing bowlers,” said an excited Sutherland.

According to CA sources, Ricky Ponting recommended Harbhajan’s name to the selectors after an impressive performance by the off-spinner in the sixth edition of Indian Premier League (IPL). Reminiscing the memorable moment of the season Ponting said, “When I took that athletic catch off Bhajji in the last IPL, I realised there was something still left in Bhajji which Australia could capitalise on.”

Selectors John Inverarity & Co. found this a great idea and decided to send back Fawad Ahmed as he was anyway thrashed by fellow Aussie Dan Christian in a practice match. Instead of risking Ahmed, Steven Smith was inducted to boost the batting and Harbhajan to take control of the spin department.

Matthew Hayden, former nemesis and now admirer of Harbhajan, said, “This is a good move; we need to weed out the spinning woes of the team and Bhajji’s presence can make a difference.”

Even Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has welcomed the move saying Harbhajan’s success will ease out the hate-crime tension between the two countries.

Apparently, Sutherland has grand plans of turning Australia into spin-friendly team. Confirming this intention with the media, Sutherland said, “We are also planning to open Australia Spin Academy Problem (ASAP) to breed quality spin bowlers and make Bhajji the chairman.”

“Let me make it clear that the move to induct Harbhajan into the Australian team is done with the blessings of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), who feel that he [Harbhajan] does not have chance to return to the Indian team with the likes of Ravichandran Ashwin, Pragyan Ojha and Ravindra Jadeja firmly securing their places in the Indian team,” added Sutherland,

With Harbhajan in the team, it was inevitable that discussions emerge within the squad. Below is an excerpt from the discussions seen on Facebook.
