This is truly a dream come true for zillions of Sachin Tendulkar fans who felt they did not get an opportunity to give the legend a fitting farewell as a One-Day International (ODI) titan. The maestro will play one last time in a specially-arranged ODI in his honour.
Tendulkar took the entire cricketing world by huge surprise when he sent a letter to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on December 23, 2012 calling it a day as ODI player.
It took not only the BCCI and Tendulkarâs team-mates by surprise, but it sent millions of his fans around the world in mourning.
“After all that our God has done for us over two decades, we deserve to worship him one last time on the ODI arena before giving him the kind of farewell that the world has not seen yet, ” said Raul Varma, President of the SRT Fan Club. He revealed that his club, which has 10 million followers around the globe, signed a petition and sent to the BCCI requesting the apex body to play him in one final ODI.
A top BCCI official, who does not wish to be identified, confirmed that the BCCI did receive the petition request from Tendulkarâs fans. “The BCCI has always cared for the sentiments of the cricket fans and approached Sachin to reconsider his decision for just one game. Sachin has been very grateful to his fans. After giving the matter some thought, he agreed to play one ODI as a gesture of goodwill towards his fans,” revealed the official.
The BCCI is in talks with some boards to decide which country will play India in the special ODI, though the official did not want to name the boards.
Itâs fairly certain that the ODI will be held at the Wankhede Stadium before the tour of South Africa. Some of the people who played a part in Tendulkar rise to the top will also be invited as BCCI special guests. The official said the BCCI has made some preliminary plans to give Tendulkar the kind of send-off that no sports would have given any sportsman in the world.
NB: This above news would have been awesome, but itâs nothing more than an April 1 joke! However, we sincerely wish this fantasy becomes a reality!
