Gayle smashed the first double century in World Cup history; the fifth overall in One-Day International (ODI) cricket. The double century is the fastest in ODI in 138 balls, breaking Virender Sehwag’s record of 140 balls. The individual score of 215 and the partnership of 372, the highest partnership for any wicket in ODIs took West Indies to 372 for two in their third match of the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup.
The record score was laced with 16 sixes and 10 boundaries and was the fifth double century in the history of the fifty overs game. Gayle’s 16 sixes equalled the record jointly held by Rohit Sharma (209 vs Australia, Bangalore, in 2013) and AB de Villiers (149 vs WI, Johannesburg, 2015) in ODI history.
West Indies are placed second in the Pool B points table with four points from two wins in three matches and will play their next match against South Africa on February 27. The table is led by India who have won two out of two matches in the ongoing World Cup.
