West Indies beat England in a thrilling final of the ICC T20 World Cup 2016 at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday. After a terrific league stage, both West Indies and England managed to successfully chase down totals against India and New Zealand respectively in the semi-finals. England lost 3 early wickets before the trusted duo of Joe Root and Jos Buttler rescued them. West Indies too were in a similar position before Marlon Samuels saved the day. Here are some of the highlights of the match. FULL CRICKET SCORECARD: England vs West Indies, ICC World T20 2016, Final at Kolkata

Samuel Badree trumps Jason Roy: Throughout the ICC T20 World Cup 2016, Jason Roy has been getting England off to great starts and Samuel Badree has been tying down the batsmen. It was only natural that the battle between the two men would be touted as one of the key clashes of the final. With all eyes on them, Badree took out Roy with the second ball on the match. Roy was struck on the pad off the first ball and nearly dismissed LBW. He survived that appeal, but was cleaned up next ball. England’s shaky start: It was bad enough that Roy was out in the first over, but England’s woes did not end just yet. Alex Hales played one from Andre Russell off his pads right into the hands of Badree at short fine leg. One over later England skipper Eoin Morgan edged Badree to Chris Gayle at slip. England were now 23 for 3. READ: Marlon Samuels, Carlos Brathwaite massacre England as West Indies win ICC T20 World Cup 2016

Joe Root and Jos Buttler repair the innings: As it has happened for some time, Joe Root and Jos Buttler proved to be the ones to save the day for England. The duo stitched together a vital 61 runs to take England to 84 before the next wicket fell. READ: England’s long batting line-up gives them the edge over West Indies in ICC T20 World Cup 2016 Final

England free-fall: After that recovery from Root and Buttler, England suffered a massive collapse. Ben Stokes started the slide when he was unable to get his bat out of the way after facing a slower bouncer from Dwayne Bravo, and offering a simple catch to Lendl Simmons. Moeen Ali edged one down the leg side two balls later, and was caught behind by Denesh Ramdin. Root soon followed them, hitting one to short fine leg. England had gone from 84 for 3 to 111 for 7. READ: T20 Word Cup 2016 Final at Kolkata: Why West Indies deserve to win

West Indies’ action replay: It was Badree who pulped England at the start, and Morgan decided to return the favour by opening with spin himself. However, it was not Moeen or Adil Rashid but Root who got the second over of the innings. Astoundingly, he had Johnson Charles and Chris Gayle hole out to Stokes for 1 and 4 respectively. Lendl Simmons was LBW to David Willey for a first ball duck which left West Indies at 11 for 3. READ: T20 World Cup 2016: Kolkata, a final hosted with heavy heart

Marlon Samuels leads the way: Samuels is no stranger to top-scoring in T20 World Cup finals. He had done it in 2012, and he did it again in 2016. West Indies were 11 for 3 at one stage and later collapsed to 107 for 6, but through all that Samuels battled on. He waged a lone battle till that advent of Carlos Brathwaite. Dynamite ending: England bowled tremendously to restrict the West Indies to 137 by the 19th over, which meant 19 runs were needed off the final over to win the tournament. More importantly, Samuels was stranded at the non-striker’s end. Brathwaite, batting on 10 from 6, was on strike. Stokes ran in to bowl. The first ball was deposited over square leg. The second over long on. The third over long off and the fourth over long on again. Brathwaite had hit 4 sixes in 4 balls as West Indies became the first team to win the T20 World Cup twice. Samuels takes on Shane Warne: After accepting the Man of the Match award for his tremendous unbeaten 85 off 66 balls with 9 fours and 2 sixes, Samuels “dedicated” his award to long-time detractor Shane Warne. The Australian spin legend had made a lot of snide remarks at Samuels’ expense on-air. Samuels finally spoke out and said, “I wake up this morning with one thing on my mind. Shane Warne has been talking continuously. All I have to say is this is for Shane Warne. I answer with the bat. I don’t answer with the mic.” READ: VIDEO: Marlon Samuels to Shane Warne, ‘I answer with the bat, I don’t answer with the mic’

Darren Sammy’s emotional speech: After accepting the trophy, Darren Sammy was asked by Nasser Hussain how he felt. It may have been a fairly straightforward question, but Sammy responded to it with an emotional speech about the hardships the West Indies cricket team had faced and how the board offered no support. Sammy said, “We had a lot of issues, we felt disrespected by our board, Mark Nicholas described our team as a team with no brains. All these things before the tournament just brought this team together. I really want to thank these 15 men, the ability to just put all those adversities aside and to come out and play this type of cricket in front of such passionate fans, it’s just tremendous.” He went on to thank the coaching staff, his team, and the fans.
