Chris Gayle has made his record 300th ODI even more special! The Universe Boss has smashed Brian Lara s record to become the highest run-scorer for West Indies in ODIs. The 39-year-old, who needed 7 runs to go past Lara, surpassed the West Indies great with a single down to third man during the second one-day international against India.

Gayle eventually was out for 11, out LBW to Bhuvneshwar Kumar and took his tally to has 10353 runs. Lara has 10348 runs including 19 hundreds and 62 fifties from 295 ODIs.

Gayle is also the only West Indian to score a double century in one-day cricket, slamming 215 against Zimbabwe at the 2015 World Cup in Canberra.

The left-handed batsman had missed out on an opportunity to go past Lara in the washed-out first ODI against India in Guyana on Thursday, managing just four runs off 31 deliveries before being cleaned up by Kuldeep Yadav.

The West Indies veteran left-handed batsman had made a U-turn during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 when he announced his intention to play ODIs and Tests against India after the global event. However, his intention to get a farewell Test was denied as he was left out from the two-Test series.

Gayle was in ominous form against England in the ODI series at home, scoring 424 runs in just 4 matches, but his form dipped in the World Cup. And add to that is the fact that he hasn t done well against India in ODIs. He last scored a 50-plus score in June 2009 when he hit a 65-ball 64 in Kingston. He has registered four centuries against the Virat Kohli-led side, but his last one came way back in 2006.
