India international Suresh Raina on Monday became the first Indian player to score 8000 T20 runs during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2019 between Uttar Pradesh and Puducherry.

The middle-order batsman needed just 11 runs to 8000 runs before match and scored 12 runs before falling to P Thamaraikannan. But UP went on to post a 179/4 in their 20 overs riding on young Priyam Garg’s 30-ball 54. (ALSO READ: Suresh Raina powers Uttar Pradesh to six-wicket win)

Raina is the sixth highest run-getter in T20s with Chris Gayle leading the tally with 12,298 runs in 369 matches, followed by Brendon McCullum (9922 runs in 370 matches), Kieron Pollard (8838 runs in 451 matches), Shoaib Malik (8603 in 340 matches) and David Warner (8111 in 259 matches). Earlier in the tournament, Rania had hit his 300 T20 six making him the second Indian player to achieve the feat after Rohit Sharma, who has hit 326 sixes in 299 matches. The player with most sixes in T20s is Gayle with 905 sixes, followed by Pollard with 572 and McCullum with 485.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli is close on Raina’s heels at No.7 with 7833 runs in 251 matches while Rohit Sharma is at the 10th position with 7795 runs in 299 matches. Rohit has the chance to surpass Dwayne Smith (7799 runs in 331 matches) in the ongoing T20 series against Australia.

Raina, who is still trying to make comeback in the Indian team has had a poor Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2019 registering score of 5, 1 and 11 to go with a match-winning 54 not out against Hyderabad earlier this week.
