Virat Kohli surpasses Sourav Ganguly, becomes eighth-highest run-scorer in ODIs

En route his innings of 120 against West Indies in the 2nd ODI at Trinidad , India skipper Virat Kohli surpassed Sourav Ganguly on the list of highest run-scorers in ODI cricket. Before the start of the series, Kohli was 77 runs away from Ganguly’s record who had piled up 11363 runs in the format.

Persistent rain washed out the first ODI after just 13 overs with Kohli not getting to bat. Kohli did not let the opportunity slip this time in Trinidad and became eighth in all-time leading run-getters tally in ODIs, also scoring his 42nd ODI century. While all of Kohli’s runs (11406) have come for India, out of Ganguly’s ODI tally, 142 runs came for Asia XI. He currently sits third on the list of most runs for India.

Overall, the list of most runs in ODIs is topped by the legendary Sachin Tendulkar. The former India player scored 18426 runs at an average of 44.83 in 452 innings. Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara, whose last ODI came at the 2015 World Cup, is second with 14234 runs. Former Australian captain, Ricky Ponting comes next with a tally of 13704 runs. The lankan duo of Sanath Jayasuriya and Mahela Jayawardene are at fourth and fifth with 13430 and 12650 runs, respectively.

Apart from moving up on the list, the 30-year-old also broke Javed Miandad‘s 26-year-old record to become the highest run-scorer against West Indies. Miandad, who scored 1930 runs, was just 19 runs ahead of Kohli at the start of the series. The Delhi-born batsman crossed the mark with a single off Jason Holder in the sixth over of the match.

Shreyas Iyer, India vs West Indies

Batting first, the visitors registered a above par score of 279/7 . Apart from Kohli, Shreyas Iyer also shone with the bat with an innings of 71 off 68 balls, batting in an ODI after 18 months.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar starred with the ball as he scalped four wickets for 31 runs in 10 overs. Mohammed Shami and Kuldeep Yadav pouched two wickets each to bundle out the home team for 210. Evin Lewis top-scored for West Indies with 65 off 80 balls.
