Match highlights, IPL 2019 CSK vs SRH: Shane Watson’s 96 powers Chennai Super Kings to victory

While there was some late innings drama, Shane Watson’s 96 were enough to power Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to a six-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad  (SRH) in the 41st match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Tuesday.

The former Australian cricketer, who only had 147 runs against his name in 10 matches in this season before tonight’s game, returned to form in some style as CSK dashed SRH’s plans to offer Jonny Bairstow a perfect farewell before his return to England. The win also helped CSK to avoid a hat-trick of defeats and did not allow SRH a hat-trick of wins.

Put in to bat, SRH scored 175/3, courtesy Manish Pandey’s unbeaten 83. While they looked set to go past 190 at one stage of the innings, CSK managed to pull the things back in the last three overs, with Dwayne Bravo and Deepak Chahar conceding just 24 runs in the last 18 balls.

While Bairstow could not score a run in his final game of this year’s final, Pandey and David Warner set the tone for SRH after the Englishman’s fall. The two counterattacked the CSK bowlers as the two did not allow the home team to restrict the flow of runs.

However, with Warner getting out in the 14th over, CSK regained control in the latter stages of the SRH innings.

CSK innings:

20th over: Sandeep into the attack! No shortage of drama here. A six on the second ball from Kedsar and then Rayudu getting out on the fourth ball. But Kedar has sealed CSK’s win. No hat-trick of defeats for the defending champions. CSK 176/4 (Kedar 11, Bravo o)

19th over: Khaleel to bowl the penultimate over! Oh wow! SRH are making a match out of this or what! Khaleel concedes just four runs in the over. CSK need 9 off the last over now. CSK 167/3 (Rayudu 20, Kedar 3)

18th over: Bhuvi to bowl his final over! Oh dear! Watson has missed out on his hundred! He gets out on 96. What an anti-climax but what a sensational innings this is. CSK three down but favourites to win this one. CSK 163/3 (Rayudu 18, Kedar 2)

17th over: Khaleel into the attack! Watson is nearing hundred. He is taking part everyone who is coming in his sights. Khaleel is tonked on the first ball of the over. CSK 160/2 (Watson 96, Rayudu 18)

16th over: Rashid into his final over! Watson goes big. He is making merry in the middle, this Watson. Rashid tosses one up and Watson goes big, really big. Then, hits a four too. CSK fans must be thrilled watching this. 15 runs off that over. CSK 150/2 (Watson 89, Rayudu 15)

15th over: Bhuvneshwar returns! Too little too late now for Bhuvi? 10 runs off the over and Watson has gone past 8000 T20 runs. 147 runs from his 10 games this season and he has turned it on in some style tonight. CSK 135/2 (Watson 76, Rayudu 13)

14th over: Rashid into the attack! Watson and Rayudu score 18 off Rashid’s third over. CSK are in a cruise control now. 120 up and they are favourites to win. CSK 125/2 (Watson 67, Rayudu 12)

13th over: Shakib in his final over! Just five runs from the over. Much needed from SRH’s perspective after the last over. CSK 109/2 (Watson 56, Rayudu 7)

12th over: Sandeep to bowl his third over! This clearly is not the end to bowl for Sandeep. He goes for 19 in his third over as Watson goes big. The Australian allrounder has his first fifty of the season as CSK move past hundred. CSK 104/2 (Watson 54, Rayudu 4)

11th over: Shakib into his 3rd over! Just 5 runs from the 11th over. Rayudu has opened his account. CSK 85/2 (Watson 37 Rayudu 3)

10th over: Rashid continues! The war of words with Watson seems to have spurred Rashid. While Watson is still in the middle, Raina has got out for 38. CSK two down. CSK 80/2 (Watson 35)

9th over: Sandeep to bowl his second! There was some drama before the time-out as Watson and Rashid get involved in some war of words. But the sanity prevails in the first over after the time out as Sandeep concedes just five runs. CSK 73/1 (Watson 34, Raina 37)

8th over: Rashid Khan into the attack! 10 runs off his first over. Raina and Watson are taking turns to hit the ball past the boundary rope, it seems. CSK have taken off. CSK 68/1 (Watson 33, Raina 34)

7th over: Shakib to bowl his second over! Nine runs off his second over as Watson goes big. CSK have shifted gears and how. They move past fifty in some style. CSK 58/1 (Watson 28, Raina 29)

6th over: Sandeep Sharma into the attack! Raina’s turn to cut loose now. Four fours and a six off Sandeep’s first over. Raina has taken on the right-arm medium-pacer in some style. CSK have almost scored fifty in the powerplay despite playing out 10 dot balls in the beginnings of their innings. CSK 49/1 (Watson 20, Raina 28)

5th over: Change of ends for Khaleel! Watson has seen enough of this! He gets going as Khaleel concedes 11 off his second over. The former Australian cricketer has hit a six and a four. CSK on the move, finally. CSK 27/1 (Watson 20, Raina 6)

4th over: Shakib to bowl his first over! Four off the first ball but the Bangladesh veteran has done well on the next five deliveries as CSK score 8 from the over. CSK 16/1 (Watson 10, Raina 5)

3rd over: Bhuvi continues! Run out! Faf puts in a dive but in vain. That was touch and go but the decision is in favour of SRH. A direct hit from Deepak Hooda and CSK have lost their first wicket. CSK’s troubles at the top continues in IPL 2019. CSK 8/1 (Watson 3, Raina 4)

2nd over: Khalell from the other end! 10 dot balls in a row and then 2 runs off the next 2 balls. SRH have made an impressive start. Is it a calm before the storm from CSK? CSK 2/0 (Watson 1, Faf 1)

1st over: Bhuvneshwar to open the bowling! A maiden to start the proceedings from the SRH skipper. CSK 0/0 (Watson 0, Faf 0)

SRH innings:

While Jonny Bairstow could not score a run in his final game of this year’s final, Pandey and David Warner set the tone for SRH after the Englishman’s fall. The two counterattacked the CSK bowlers as the two did not allow the home team to restrict the flow of runs.

However, with Warner getting out in the 14th over, CSK started to pull back the things, with SRH being able to score only 24 runs in the last three overs of their innings. They still have 175 runs on the board but are they 10-15 runs short?

20th over: Bravo with the final over! Just 8 runs off it. Bravo was struggling to bowl that last ball but he has bowled an excellent last over, getting those yorkers right on the money. CSK have done well to pull back the things in the last three overs as SRH have struggled to finish on a high despite Pandey’s unbeaten 83. SRH 175/3 (Pandey 83, Yusuf Pathan 5)

19th over: Chahar to bowl the penultimate over! Excellent over this is from Chahar, just seven runs and a wicket of Vijay Shankar. CSK have pulled back the things brilliantly in the last few overs. SRH 167/3 (Pandey 80)

18th over: Bravo into his third over! 9 runs off it as Vijay creams one over the covers for four. Neither team will be disappointed with this over. SRH 160/2 (Pandey 78, Vijay Shankar 21)

17th over: Tahir’s last over! 13 runs from the 17th over as Manish Pandey hits a big six. He has moved into 70s now. But SRH will need him to stay till the end as they eye big finish. SRH 151/2 (Pandey 75, Vijay Shankar 16)

16th over: Jadeja in his final over! Just four runs off it. Good way to enter the strategic time out, CSK will think. Will this be the over that help the home team to turn the tables? Let’s wait and watch. SRH 138/2 (Pandey 65, Vijay Shankar 13)

15th over: Tahir from the other end! 10 runs off the over as Vijay Shankar hits that gorgeous-looking straight six! SRH have moved past 130 now. Last five are going to begin. SRH 134/2 (Pandey 64, Vijay Shankar 10)

14th over: Harbhajan to bowl his final over! A breakthrough, finally. David Warner departs for 57 as MS Dhoni whips off the bails. He looked tired, that Warner. CSK have struck just when it looked that Warner-Pandey will steamroll. SRH 124/2 (Pandey 61, Vijay Shankar 3)

13th over: Change of ends for Jadeja! Does not change much of his fortunes though as his former India under-19 teammate hits him for four on the first ball. SRH score 8 off the 13th over. SRH 116/1 (Warner 53, Pandey 60)

12th over: Tahir continues! Just five runs from an over. Warner, meanwhile, has brought up his 43rd IPL fifty. He has been on a roll this IPL. SRH 108/1 (Warner 51, Pandey 54)

11th over: Bravo continues! There’s no stopping Pandey tonight, it seems. He has brought up his fifty and SRH have moved past hundred. The right-hander is on fire on a comeback. The promotion to number three is doing wonders.  Bravo goes for 12 in his second over. SRH 103/1 (Warner 49, Pandey 51)

10th over: Imran Tahir to bowl his first! No matter who comes into the attack, we will attack, seems to be Warner and Pandey’s mantra. Pandey has smacked a biggie off Tahir as SRH score 10 off the 10th over to move into the 90s. SRH 91/1 (Warner 48, Pandey 41)

9th over: Jadeja into his second over! The big shots make their return. The last over was an aberration, it seems. Jadeja goes for 12 in his second over as Warner hits a six. SRH 81/1 (Warner 47, Pandey 32)

8th over: Dwayne Bravo into the attack! Some sanity after some big overs. Only six runs off Bravo’s first. SRH 69/1 (Warner 37, Pandey 30)

7th over: Jadeja to bowl his first over! David Warner resumes the four-hitting party! Jadeja’s first over has gone for nine runs as SRH move past 60. SRH 63/1 (Warner 33, Pandey 28)

6th over: Harbhajan gets another over! Another big over for SRH, 11 runs off it. Harbhajan is not looking too happy with the way the things have gone in his last two overs. SRH cross fifty-run mark without Bairstow scoring a run. End of powerplay. SRH 54/1 (Warner 25, Pandey 27)

5th over: Chahar into his 3rd over! 13 off the 5th over. Warner and Pandey are counterattacking here. The Bairstow dismissal has not stopped them from scoring at quick pace. SRH 43/1 (Warner 24, Pandey 17)

4th over: Harbhajan into his 2nd over! Warner and Pandey take on Bhajji. A wicket in the first over and now he gets hit for 2 sixes as SRH score 15 from the fourth over. SRH 30/1 (Warner 18, Pandey 10)

3rd over: Chahar continues with the ball! 6 runs from Chahar’s second over. Warner has hit a four and moved to 9. SRH 15/1 (Warner 9, Pandey 4)

2nd over: Harbhajan from the other end! The Indian veteran has spoilt Bairstow’s farewell. SRH score five runs from the over but it’s the wicket that will matter to them the most. SRH 9/1 (Warner 4, Pandey 4)

1st over: Deepak Chahar with the new ball! The right-arm pacer bowls a good first over, only four runs off it. SRH 4/0 (Warner, Bairstow)

07.35 PM: Here’s what the captains – Dhoni and Bhuvneshwar Kumar – said at the toss.

Dhoni: “We will bowl first. It is good to be back at home. We will be here for the next 10 days. When you are not travelling it brings down the fatigue. We have made one change, Harbhajan comes in place of Shardul Thakur. our top-order needs to be consistent. All the batters have been batting well but they need to take care of their shot selection.”

Bhuvi: “We would have bowled first too. We will miss Williamson but Warner and Bairstow have been brilliant for us. Not really worried about the middle-order, they have not got much chance in the middle. But we all know they are talented. Manish Pandey comes in place of Nadeem.”

07.33 PM: Team news: CSK have made one change to their playing XI as Harbhajan Singh replaces Shardul Thakur in the team. Meanwhile, Manish Pandey has replaced Shahbaz Nadeem in the playing XI for SRH.

CSK Playing XI: Shane Watson, Faf du Plessis, Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, Kedar Jadhav, MS Dhoni (captain/wicketkeeper), Dwayne Bravo, Ravindra Jadeja, Deepak Chahar, Harbhajan Singh, Imran Tahir.

SRH Playing XI: David Warner, Jonny Bairstow (wicketkeeper), Manish Pandey, Vijay Shankar, Shakib Al Hasan, Yusuf Pathan, Deepak Hooda, Rashid Khan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar (captain), Sandeep Sharma, K Khaleel Ahmed

07.30 PM: TOSS UPDATE:

MS Dhoni has won the toss and Chennai Super Kings have elected to bowl against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

07.18 PM: Darren Ganga on the pitch for today’s game:

“More than 50 per cent of the wickets have been taken by spinners on this wicket. So, spinners will obviously play an important role. This pitch is even-looking, there is no grass on this wicket and there is a little bit more moisture. The skill of the batsmen to score against the spinners might just be the difference in this encounter.”

They are playing away from home but SRH is not short on support.

Deepak Chahar has been one of the best bowlers in the powerplay overs in the IPL recently.

Hello and welcome to our match coverage of Match 41 of the IPL 2019 between Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on Tuesday.

Dream11 Tips and Prediction

Today’s IPL 2019 match is between Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabadat the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Match 41 is the second in less than a week between the two teams. MS Dhoni-led CSK are second on the IPL 2019 points table and SRH are fourth.

CSK remained on top of the points table for several weeks but slipped to second on Monday after Delhi Capitals beat Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur.

Back at home after two aways matches, both of which they lost, CSK will be hopeful of getting back to winning ways.

CHENNAI SUPER KINGS & SUNRISERS HYDERABAD LIKELY TEAMS

Back at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, CSK may want to reinforce their spin bowling with the addition of Harbhajan Singh instead of Shardul Thakur. Shane Watson, after a run of low scores, could face the axe if the management opt for Mitchell Santner. In this scenario, Ambati Rayudu may get promoted back to opening.

The other option is to get Sam Billings in as opener for Watson.

CSK likely XI: 1 Ambati Rayudu, 2 Faf du Plessis, 3 Suresh Raina, 4 Kedar Jadhav, 5 MS Dhoni (capt/wk), 6 Dwayne Bravo, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Mitchell Santner, 9 Harbhajan Singh, 10 Deepak Chahar, 11 Imran Tahir

Possible changes: Shardul Thakur for Harbhajan Singh, Shane Watson for Mitchell Santner/Sam Billings

The news that Kane Williamson will fly back to New Zealand after his grandmother passed away means that Bhuvneshwar Kumar will lead SRH and one of Shakib Al Hasan and Mohammad Nabi will play.

SRH likely XI: 1 David Warner, 2 Jonny Bairstow (wk), 3 Shakib Al Hasan, 4 Vijay Shankar, 5 Deepak Hooda/Manish Pandey, 6 Yusuf Pathan, 7 Rashid Khan, 8 Bhuvneshwar Kumar (capt), 9 Sandeep Sharma, 10 Shahbaz Nadeem, 11 Khaleel Ahmed

Possible changes: Shakib Al Hasan/Mohammad Nabi for Kane Williamsion.

My Dream11 Team

Jonny Bairstow (wk), Ambati Rayudu, Faf du Plessis, David Warner (CAPT), Shakib Al Hasan, Ravindra Jadeja, Vijay Shankar, Dwayne Bravo, Imran Tahir, Khaleel Ahmed, Rashid Khan (VICE-CAPTAIN)

PREVIEW:

After three losses in a row, last season’s runners-up Sunrisers Hyderabad last week won both their matches to move back into the top four of the IPL 2019 points table.

In this same time, defending champions Chennai Super Kings lost both their games but remain No 1 in the league with 14 points.

Match 41 of IPL 12 pits the two teams against each other on Tuesday, for the second time in five days.

So much of SRH’s success has been based on the performances of their openers David Warner and Jonny Bairstow, who have recorded all three of this season’s best totals in the Powerplay overs. The last time these two teams met was last week, when Rashid Khan helped quell CSK’s batsmen before Warner and Bairstow put on a blazing opening stand to end their team’s losing streak.

This will be the last match for Bairstow, who will return to England after this match. What chances of a fitting farewell?

IPL 2019 Player of the Week: Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Jonny Bairstow

CSK are back home after two games on the road, and will be confident of getting back to winning ways. A win over SRH will give them 16 points and seal their place in the IPL playoffs.

The issue for CSK is getting support for MS Dhoni, who nearly pulled off victory over RCB on Sunday.
