Gujarat Lions roar at the start: Having won the toss, Gujarat Lions elected to field first. The decision proved to be perfect. Praveen Kumar and Dhawal Kulkarni opened bowling. Robin Uthappa hit Kulkarni for back-to-back boundaries in the second over of the innings, but Praveen struck twice in the next over to turn the innings around early. Uthappa soon followed, falling to Kulkarni after hitting him for a third boundary. A couple of overs later Suryakumar Yadav was caught brilliantly by Suresh Raina at slip. KKR were now 24 for 4 inside the powerplay. FULL CRICKET SCORECARD: Kolkata Knight Riders vs Gujarat Lions, IPL 2016, Match 38 at Kolkata

Praveen Kumar’s golden spell: Praveen Kumar, opening bowling, bowled one of the most probing spells of the tournament so far. Having started with a quiet 5-run opening over — he nearly took out Gautam Gambhir’s off stump — he followed up with a tremendous over. Gambhir lost his leg stump off the first ball after trying to play one down fine leg. Manish Pandey survived only 2 balls before edging a superb delivery that swung late behind to wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik. Praveen ended up with enviable figures of 2 for 19 in 4 overs with 1 maiden. FULL CRICKET UPDATES: Kolkata Knight Riders vs Gujarat Lions, IPL 2016, Match 38 at Kolkata

Shakib Al Hasan, Yusuf Pathan repair the innings: At 24 for 4 inside the powerplay, it looked like KKR would go the way the Mumbai Indians (MI) had earlier in the day and get shot out for less than 100. But as they have done so often, KKR managed to find heroes with the bat even after the top order failed. It was once again Yusuf Pathan who rose to the occasion, this time with Shakib Al Hasan for company. Yusuf smacked the first ball he faced to the boundary, and did so 6 more times in his innings. He also hit 1 six. Yusuf was the aggressor in the partnership, and gave KKR the impetus their innings was sorely lacking. Yusuf finished unbeaten on 63 off 41 balls with 7 fours and 1 six. Meanwhile, for the first half of his innings Shakib was struggling. At one stage Shakib was batting on 23 off 30 balls. A six off Dwayne Bravo took his score to 32 off 35 balls. That was when Shakib took off. Shakib hit Bravo for two sixes in a row to start the 18th over of the innings. In the next over Praveen Kumar was hit for a couple of boundaries. Shakib hit Bravo for his fourth six in the final over of the innings, and Shakib ended up unbeaten on 66 from 49 balls with 4 fours and as many sixes. The duo put on a record 134 runs for the fifth wicket.

Dwayne Smith, Brendon McCullum fire it up: As has been the case so often in this tournament, Dwayne Smith and Brendon McCullum got GL off to a flier. Smith hit 27 off 18 with 4 fours and 1 six, while McCullum smashed 3 fours and 2 sixes in his 24-ball 29. The openers put on 42 inside the powerplay to get GL up and running.

Dinesh Karthik, Aaron Finch fall just short: After the openers got the momentum first up, it was up to the middle order to take GL over the line. Dinesh Karthik smacked 51 from 29 balls with 8 fours and 1 six, while Aaron Finch smashed a 10-ball 29 which included 3 fours and 2 sixes. GL ended up winning by 5 wickets with 2 overs in hand.
