Born, November 14, 1985, Manoj Kumar Tiwary is an Indian cricketer who plays for Bengal in domestic cricket. He is one of the most unfortunate cricketers in Indian cricket as he always had his foot on the entrance of national side but could only make limited appearances. Bad luck and injury have hampered his progress but nevertheless he remains a Bengal cricket stalwart and the side s best batsman since Sourav Ganguly. As Tiwary turns 31, Abhishek Kumar takes out 12 facts about him.

1. Compared with Kevin Pietersen: Tiwary was compared to Kevin Pietersen for his aggressive batting style early in his career and for his ability to attack any bowler by going down the pitch. He also idolises Pietersen and his love for him can be seen in his batting.

2. Ranji Trophy 2006-07: A 22-year-old Tiwary had a prolific Ranji season in 2006-07. He scored 796 runs at 99.50, helping Bengal end as runners-up that season.

3. Injury prone: Tiwary was all set to make his national debut in mid-2007 when a shoulder injury on the eve of the match resulted in his ouster from the side. Later, he made his debut as a last moment replacement to Yuvraj Singh at Brisbane in January 2008. A jet-lagged Tiwary was cleaned-up by Brett Lee for 2. He frequently got injured and that took away a chunk of his playing days and hampered his national progress.

4. Thanks to Virender Sehwag: It is only because of Sehwag that Tiwary could score a hundred in One-Day Internationals (ODIs). During the fifth One-Day International (ODI) against West Indies in 2011, Sehwag captaining the side wanted Tiwary to play the final match as he was sitting in the reserves in the first four. India had already won the series and Sehwag wanted to try the bench strength. Since no regular wanted to miss the match, Sehwag decided to rest himself in order to give a chance to Tiwary. He didn t disappoint and scored 104 not out and was awarded with Man of the Match award.

5. When MS Dhoni imitated Tiwary: During a Twenty20 match against Sri Lanka in 2012 at Pallekele Stadium, Tiwary s brilliant fielding effort saw the end of Thisara Perera at the batting crease. After that, captain MS Dhoni mimicked Tiwary s style of celebration in a very funny way.

6. Hailed by Shoaib Akhtar: Tiwary wasn t very lucky with IPL as well. Most of the times he either found himself injured and if not then benched. During the eighth edition of Indian Premier League, former Pakistani pacer Shoaib Akhta mentioned that Tiwary should captain the Delhi Daredevils, while he was made to warm benches.

7. Delhi to Kolkata return: Delhi Daredevils (DD) first signed Tiwary for US$ 675,000 in the inaugural IPL and in the third season he moved to his home city, Kolkata. He played four seasons for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), hitting the tournament winning runs in 2012 edition. However, in 2014, Delhi Daredevils again bought him and he continues to be a part of that outfit.

8. Fight with Gautam Gambhir: In October 2015, during a Ranji Trophy match between Delhi and Bengal, Tiwary captaining the latter, was involved in heated conversation with Delhi skipper Gautam Gambhir. Later, both blamed each other. Gambhir was fined 70% of the match fees and Tiwary 40%. Ironically, Tiwary plays for Delhi in IPL, while Gambhir leads the Kolkata outfit. Both have not only shared the India dressing room but also been a part of memorable wins for Kolkata Knight Riders.

9. Leg-spinner: Tiwary as a teenager made news for his leg-spin but in later years, it s his batting that took preference. However, he can still spin it when required. In the fourth ODI against Sri Lanka in 2012 at Colombo, Tiwary bowled a spell of 10 overs, took four important wickets conceding 61 runs. He got the key wickets of Dinesh Chandimal, Angelo Mathews, Jeevan Mendis and Thisara Perera. Tiwary also is an excellent fielder.

10. Wife: Tiwary got married to his long time girlfriend Sushmita on July 18, 2013, after dating for seven years. Both met through a common friend and it was love at first sight for Tiwary. Here’s his latest Instagram post with his wife.
