Opening batting against West Indies in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 quarter-final at Wellington, Martin Guptill smashed his way into the record books: his 237 not out off 163 balls is the highest score in World Cup cricket history, going past Chris Gayleâs 147-ball 215 against Zimbabwe at Manuka Oval, Canberra less than a month ago. It was obviously the first time that two One-Day International (ODI) double-hundreds were scored in the same series or tournament. New Zealand rout West Indies by 143 runs to make it to semi-final of ICC Cricket World Cup 2015

Viv Richardsâ 181, scored at 144.8 runs per hundred balls (almost at a pace similar to those of Gayle and Guptill), is indeed commendable â more so, given that National Stadium, Karachi is by no means a small ground, and the feat was achieved over 27 years back. Kapil Devâs iconic 175 not out, fourth on the list before the tournament, has dropped to seventh (David Warner had scored 178 earlier this World Cup). Martin Guptill becomes fifth batsman in ODI history to score double ton

When Sachin Tendulkar scored the first ODI double-hundred in February 2010, it seemed a remarkable feat. Both Viv Richards and Saeed Anwar had their records going for a decade; one had perhaps expected Tendulkarâs to last the same as well. Instead, there have been five more double-hundreds during the time span, with Rohit Sharma scoring two. Guptillâs score in the second on the list.

Though Rohitâs 264 remains the highest ODI score, Guptillâs 237 not out is the highest unbeaten score. He went past Tendulkarâs 200 not out. Interestingly, Guptill himself had 189 not out at Rose Bowl; it is now the joint fourth-best.

Guptill joined the elite panel of batsmen with multiple 175s in ODIs. All five names have one distinction or the other: Tendulkar is the only one with three entries on the list; Richards was the only member of this group for a whopping 22 years; both entries of Sehwag came in the same year; Rohit is the only one with two 200s; and Guptill is the only one not to be dismissed.

Rohit previously held the record for both opening slots, but Guptill went past his 209 today to register the highest score for anyone who had faced the first ball of an innings. Rohit, however, holds the record for a No. 2 batsman.

Guptill was involved in seven partnerships in the innings (with Brendon McCullum, Kane Williamson, Ross Taylor, Corey Anderson, Grant Elliott, Luke Ronchi, and Daniel Vettori), and every stand has been worth 25 or more. Though this is the ninth occasion that a side has registered seven 25-plus stands in the same innings, this is the first time that a batsman has been involved in seven.
