Pakistan vs West Indies 3rd Test, Day 5: Roston Chase’s valiant epic and other highlights

It was a dramatic day at Windsor Park as Pakistan edged past West Indies in a nervy contest. West Indies fought hard, but could not save the Test despite of an unbeaten century from Roston Chase. West Indies began the day still needing 297 runs to win with 9 wickets in hand. Pakistan were on top for most of the day, but Chase batted well along with the tail and eventually, the match went down to the wire. With this win, Pakistan registered their first ever series win in the Caribbean. Guard of honour for Misbah and Younis: This was the last time Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan were stepping into the field for Pakistan. Before the start of Day Five, their teammates welcomed them into the ground with a guard of honour as a mark of respect for their contribution to the game and Pakistan cricket.

Hasan’s drops: Hasan Ali dropped Chase twice off his own bowling — once on 66, the other on 91. This added to Pakistan’s frustration as they believed Chase’s wicket could win them the match easily.

Chase’s near-match-saving ton: Chase fought a lone battle for West Indies — albeit in vain. He remained unbeaten on 101 off 239 deliveries, keeping West Indies afloat till the end. However, despite his best of efforts, West Indies could not hold on. They were bowled out with just one over left.

Abbas’ no ball: Chase got yet another life when he edged one to slip off Mohammad Abbas off a no-ball. Chase was batting on 92 at that point. Had he been dismissed at that juncture, the match would not have gone to the wire.

Abbas’ beamer: Abbas was peppering Devendra Bishoo with short deliveries throughout his stay at the creae. In one such instance, Abbas bowled in full pace as the ball whizzed past Bishoo’s head to the wicketkeeper. The umpire immediately called a no-ball and Abbas apologised immediately. Ironically, a short got Bishoo’s wicket in the end.

Gabriel’s brain-freeze: All Shannon Gabriel had to do was to play out the last delivery by Yasir Shah, so that Chase could be on strike for the final over. However, Gabriel decided to slog; the ball took the inside edge and crashed on to this wicket, much to the disappointment of the West Indies players and supporters. That shot handed Pakistan a win in the end.

Yasir’s spell: Yasir picked up yet another five-for in the second innings of the third Test to take his tally of wickets for the series to 25. On Day Five, he managed to strike early in each of the first two sessions. He also got the wicket that won his side the series. Yasir has been one of Pakistan’s most consistent bowlers over the last couple of years; his efforts in these Tests won him the Player of the Series award as well.
