Since its inception in 1934-35, Ranji Trophy has been the marquee tournament in Indian domestic cricket. Bharath Seervi looks back at some aggregate statistics.

Arguably the most crucial stepping stone for budding Indian cricketers, the Ranji Trophy is into its 81st year. There have been cricketers who have gone on to the highest level; some others have remained mainstays at state level.

Let us have a look at what 80 years of the tournament had in offer for us.

Of the 5,016 five-wicket hauls in Ranji Trophy, as many as 157 have resulted in eight or more wickets in an innings. Premangsu Chatterjee’s 10 for 20 remains the best figures, while Pradeep Sunderam’s 10 for 78 is the only other incident of all 10 wickets by a bowler in a Ranji Trophy innings.
