Afghanistan s proficient leg-spinner, Rashid Khan was born on September 20, 1998. Rashid has grown in reputation and has become a household name for his leg-spin and well disguised googly. He is also a hard-hitter, and has emerged as a genuine match-winner. On the occasion of Rashid s birthday, Shruti Hariharan lists down some fascinating numbers, facts and hilarious incidents about the teenage sensation who leaves the batsmen spellbound with his spin and makes the umpire dance to the tunes of how s that .

Cricket over challenges: At the time when he did not have the right to vote, Rashid chose an unimaginable path. However, it was not an easy task for the teenager. Coming from a volatile region close to Pakistan called Nanhargar, Rashid has defied quite a few odds to reach this stage. Rashid, who has 6 brothers and 4 sisters, chose cricket over his family business at the age of 17. The street-smart cricketer entered the domestic side in 2012 and in 2015 was chosen for the national side. He was only 16 when he played Pakistan Under-19 at Lahore and impressed everyone with a 67 not out in his second game.

The Boom Boom effect: When Rashid made his debut, he was 17 years old. When Afridi burst into the international circuit in 1996, he was 16. Both are right-arm leg-spinners. Where Afridi is known to bowl quickly, Rashid is known to complete his spells very quickly. In a span of one year, Rashid has also cemented his spot in Afghanistan. He has followed Afridi since childhood as mentioned on his interview to ICC and has tried and replicated that.

Eclipsing WaqarYounis: One needed some sort of super natural powers to eclipseWaqarYounis record. Rashid at the age of 18 years and 185 days became the youngest to 50 ODI wickets.During the first ODI against Ireland at Noida, Rashid registered the feat. Rashid is the fifth-fastest to the feat jointly tied with teammate Hamid Hassan, Curtly Ambrose, Pat Patterson and Len Pascoe. The ones who have reached the feat quicker are: Matt Henry (25 ODIs), Shane Warne (25 ODIs), Dennis Lillee (24 matches), Mitchell McClenaghan (23 matches), AjitAgarkar (23 matches) and AjanthaMendis (19 matches).

However, Rashid was the youngest to achieve this feat and by some distance. Waqar had set the record in 1990 against West Indies at Karachi. He registered the feat 10 days short of his 19th birthday.

Hi-Five: Afghanistan found their knight in shining armour during the Ireland series in form of Rashid. After setting new records in ODIs, it was time to make the batsmen dance to his tunes in T20Is. The 18-year old became the quickest to 5-wicket haul, ending with figures of 5 for 3 to demolish Ireland in the second T20I. That s not all. Rashid s performance extended Afghanistan s wins in T20Is to record streak of 10.

IPL to CPL to BBL: Impressed by his form in Noida, IPL franchises felt the need to pick Rashid over then top T20I bowler Imran Tahir. Rashid became the first Afghanistan player to break open the doors of IPL for a whopping INR 4 crore. Mohammad Nabi was also selected, however, for his base price. Rashid was an instant hit and became the favourites of his Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). He was the sixth highest wicket-taker in IPL. The teenage sensation s impact was so much so that Ben Cutting had to term him his favourite bowler since IPL. Rashid then played in the CPL and will soon be representing Adelaide Strikers in BBL.

Bhai-bhai: Rashid and Nabiare not only winning games for their country and franchises but also share a brotherly bond off the field. Nabi was the first notice to this bright talent at their cricket academy. They even spend sometime off the field, be it car rides or celebrating Eid together.

Dream Meet: Before the IPL went underway, Rashid had mentioned on one of his interviews, I love Sachin Tendulkar a lot. He has been a huge inspiration all these years. I want to meet him. Rashid s dreams were already turning into reality and it was an icing on the cake when he met the legend himself. Rashid not just met the Master but also clicked a selfie with him.

West Indies date with 7: Rashid had already put Afghanistan on the road map with his magnificent performance in IPL. Prior to the CPL, Rashid introduced himself in style. The leg-spinner left West Indies in shambles registering his best ODI figures of 7 for 18. The record books could not set its eyes off Rashid since. His figures were the fourth best figures in the history of ODI cricket after Chaminda Vaas, Afridi, Glenn McGrath.

It was also the best figures by any Associate Nation bowler in ODI history. Previous best was Scotland s Josh Davey, who picked up 6 for 28 against Afghanistan.

Tryst with Lord s: While Rashid was busy tick marking every dream that turned to reality, there was one such dream that still was untouched, playing at the Mecca of Cricket Lord s. However, his tryst with Lord s did happen. Not only Rashid s dream came true but he also got to bowl against the likes of Brendon McCullum, Misbah-ul-Haq, ShivnarineChanderpauland likes.

Afghanistan played MCC at Lord s on July 11, 2017. Although Shapoor Zadran ruled the Afghanistan bowling unit with 8-2-29-3, Rashid claimed the wicket of Samit Patel, finishing with 8-0-39-1.

Hilarious marriage proposal: We have seen weird marriage proposals in different matches. The recent one was of a Pakistan policeman carrying a board asking Virat Kohli to get married to him during the World XI tour. However, a true Guyana Amazon Warriors fan hit the right notes and knew that a man s way to his heart is through his stomach. But considering Rashid is just 19, will he consider it?

2 is a company, 3 is a crowd: CPL had its touch of Rashid Khan to it when Guyana Amazon Warriors locked horns with Jamaica Tallawahs in the eliminator. Rashid did an unthinkable when he claimed a hat-trick, the first one in CPL history. Interestingly, all three wickets were googlies and were bowled. GAW did make to the Qualifiers later but lost to Trinbago Knight Riders. However, Rashid s outing in his first CPL turned to be memorable.

From spinner to batting to captaincy: Rashid who made his debut in 2015 was handed with a huge responsibility pretty early in his cricketing career. Rashid became the captain of a T20 franchise Band-e-Amir Dragons in the Shpageeza Cricket League (SCL), a domestic T20 League organised by the Afghanistan Cricket Board. Prior to him Taimur Ali and Sri Lanka s Dinesh Chandimal became the first and second youngest players to lead a side in a T20 match at the age of 17, and 18 years respectively.

Just a County away: Rashid has just begun and county teams are already thronging upon the youngster to add a bit of spin taste to their side. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is seeking government clarification on the 19-year-old bowler’s eligibility.

A century already?A captain, hat-trick to his name, galore of records and already a century! Rashid became the youngest bowler to claim 100 T20 wickets. Khan achieved the feat just 5 days before turning 19. He beat the record of English left-arm spinner Danny Briggs who reached the milestone at 23 years. What s in store next for the leg-spinner?

Superstar Rashid: The only untouched aspect for Rashid was acting. However, this time it was a documentary on himself and Nabi. The Ministry of External affairs had proposed the idea to create a documentary on the rising stars of Afghanistan. Under the working title Afghan Cricketers: The Rising Stars , the Ministry wanted the short movie to be made in English in three formats a 10-minute complete version; a shorter 5-minute version; and, a 2-minute promo. The documentary was to reach out to the budding cricketers in a war-torn country.

Age: A lot of questions have been raised on the teenager s age. Even a Quora user had raised the question, Is Rashid Khan really 18 years old? Well, his certificates say so and officially, he celebrates his 19th birthday today. The cricket records says so and that should be enough to answer the questions.

Rashid Khan a musician or cricketer? Many knew about Ustad Rashid Khan until cricketing world welcomed their Rashid Khan. Before IPL, the world knew just about the Indian classical musician.
