New Zealand must have had their tails up when Tim Southee had Mominul Haque caught-behind early on Day Two of the first Test at Basin Reserve, Wellington. But Bangladesh, buoyed by a massive partnership between Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim, added a humongous 359 the highest partnership for any wicket for Bangladesh. The stand ended when Mushfiqur played a lazy stroke off Trent Boult, edging it to BJ Watling, for 159 though not after Shakib had reached his maiden double-hundred. Soon afterwards, Shakib pushed Boult to mid-off to take a single that took him to 207 now the highest individual Test score for Bangladesh. Shakib eventually chopped one on to the stumps off Neil Wagner, for 217.

The Bangladesh batsmen broke plenty of records en route 542 for 7, their fourth-highest score till date in Test cricket and their highest outside the subcontinent. Let us have a look at the numerous records that tumbled over the day:

Both Shakib and Mushfiqur have 4 Test hundreds each. They have joined Mominul as the joint third on the all-time list of Bangladeshis. The only men ahead of them are Tamim (8) and Ashraful (6).

Shakib also became the third Bangladeshi to go past the 3,000-run mark in Test cricket, after Tamim (3,405) and Habibul Bashar (3,026). Shakib is currently on 3,146 Test runs, which means he has gone past Bashar, and is currently second on the all-time list.

Only Nathan Astle (222 runs at 132.1) and Graham Thorpe (200* at 86.9) both in the same Test, at Christchurch in 2001-02 had scored more than 200 on New Zealand soil at a faster pace.

Sri Lanka, at Galle in 2012-13, were the only other side to have achieved this. In that case the bowlers were Shaminda Eranga (34-4-122-2), Rangana Herath (62-11-161-2), and Ajantha Mendis (36-3-152-2).
