Rilee Rossouw scored 132 while Hashim Amla scored 133 against West Indies at Centurion. Rossouw’ score is among the highest ‘second-highest’ score in an innings in ODIs. Bharath Seervi lists some numbers on the topic.

Just a few days ago at Johannesburg, AB de Villiers smashed 149 off just 44 balls; on his way he reached the fastest half-century and century in One Day Internationals (ODIs). But he ended as the second-highest scorer in the innings, as Hashim Amla scored 153 not out. As a result de Villiers ended up having the third-highest ‘second-highest’ score in an ODI innings. Similarly, just a couple of matches later, Rossouw scored 132, just one run less than Amla.

The highest ‘second-highest’ score in an ODI innings is 161 by James Marshall when his fellow opener Brendon McCullum scored 166 against Ireland at Aberdeen in July 2008. The only one other time when there was two individual scores in excess of 150 for the same team in an ODI was at Hyderabad in 1999, when Sachin Tendulkar scored an unbeaten 186 and Rahul Dravid 153 against New Zealand.

All the above 15 occasions have occurred while batting first. The highest ‘second-highest’ score in an ODI innings while chasing is Sourav Ganguly’s 117 against England at Premadasa in 2002 where Virender Sehwag was the highest scorer with 126 runs.

The highest identical score in an ODI innings is 125, achieved by Graeme Smith and de Villiers against Sri Lanka at Johannesburg in January 2012.

But what if we consider the entire match? De Villiers’ 149 comes down to the fifth-highest ‘second-highest’ score. The highest, of course, was 164 by Ricky Ponting, surpassed by Herschelle Gibbs’ 175 in the second innings in the famous match at New Wanderers where South Africa had chased down 435. The other is score more than 150 belongs to Tamil Iqbal (154) after Charles Coventry scored 194 not out in 2009.
