Luke Ronchi and Grant Elliott recently shared Man of the Match award in the One-Day International against Sri Lanka. Bharath Seervi lists the occasions when two players shared the Man of the Match award in a Test.

In Test matches, like in ODIs, sharing Man of the Match awards have become a rarity in the recent years. There has not been any occasion of Man of the Match award being shared by two players from the same side of the opposing sides in the past four years. The last occasion was in July 2010 when Salman Butt from Pakistan and Simon Katich from Australia shared the Man of the Match award at Lord’s. Only once more in this decade has this happened, when Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel were the joint Man of the Match recipients in the Johannesburg test against England in January 2010.

Two players from the same side sharing the Man of the Match award in a Test match

So far there have been 14 instances when two players from the same team were given the Man of the Match award in a Test match. The first such occasion was for the Indian team against Sri Lanka at Nagpur in December 1986 where Dilip Vengsarkar and Maninder Singh received the award. Most of the occasions, like in ODIs, took place in the 1990s.

Note: In the Test match between New Zealand and Sri Lanka in February 1991 at Hamilton there were three players given the Man of the Match award — Ian Smith and Andrew Jones from New Zealand and Ashanka Gurusinha from Sri Lanka.

A player from each side getting Man of the Match award in a Test

There have been 26 further occasions of two players, one from each side, sharing the Man of the Match award. The first such instance was in March 1977 in the Test match between Pakistan and West Indies at Queen’s Park Oval, when Wasim Raja and Colin Croft were the recipients. There have been several such instances in 1980s and 1990s and continued till early 2000s. Since then it has been very rare.

 Note:

-         South Africa beat West Indies by 351 runs at Centurion in 1998-99. The adjudicators named the entire South African team Man of the Match. The players were Hansie Cronje, Gary Kirsten, Herschelle Gibbs, Jacques Kallis, Darryl Cullinan, Jonty Rhodes, Shaun Pollock, Mark Boucher, Lance Klusener, Allan Donald and Paul Adams.

-          The groundstaff did an excellent job to ensure play got underway on Day Five at New Wanderers in 2000-01. It was a draw otherwise (New Zealand 200, South Africa 261 for three), but so commendable was the effort that the Chris Scott (Head Groundstaff) and his team were named Man of the Match.
