Umesh Yadav’s figures most expensive in history

Day Four of the fourth Test between India and Australia at Sydney saw the Indian bowling attack reach a new low, as they conceded 251 for four in 40 overs, leading by 348 at stumps. Most Indian bowlers went for a hammering. In fact, Suresh Raina, India’s go-to man during the middle overs in the limited-over formats, was the most economic bowler with 18 runs from four overs. Perhaps he should have got a few more overs ahead of the fast bowlers, all of whom went for over 5.50 an over.

Between them, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami, and Umesh Yadav ended up conceding 124 runs off 17 overs at a deplorable 7.29 an over when the wicket was assisting the bowlers. The Australians were brutally aggressive, but the Indian fast bowlers were wayward as well, bowling all over the place. The same could not be said about Ravichandran Ashwin, who, despite conceding 105 off 19 overs, bowled a steady line, and earned wickets when the batsmen went after him.

Umesh, however, deserves a special mention for registering the most expensive figures in history for anyone who has bowled three or more overs.
