A long hiatus of 83 Tests and a wait of 8 years later, Parthiv Patel walked out to the Test arena. He has to thank Wriddhiman Saha s injury for that. He last played a Test in 2008 and it is now the 10th-most consecutive matches to be missed by any Indian cricketer. Since he played his last Test, 29 players made their Test debut for India, 14 of them are part of current squad.

We will not even discuss his debut. It was in an era when Javagal Srinath, Steve Waugh and Carl Hooper were active cricketers. In fact, he made his Test debut three-and-years before MS Dhoni did. When Parthiv played a Test before the Mohali one, it was Anil Kumble, who was the Indian captain. In the mean time, Dhoni became the Test captain and retired as well. Parthiv s shocking comeback in Tests after 8 years has put him under spotlight. Let us sail in the past and look what his current teammates were doing when the Gujarat wicketkeeper played in his previous Test.

1. Murali Vijay

At 32, Vijay is the oldest member of the current side. He was toiling hard in the domestic circuit in bid for a national berth. Vijay went on to make his Test debut in November 2008, a few months after Parthiv’s previous Test.

2. Cheteshwar Pujara

Two months after Parthiv played in the Colombo Test, Pujara, then 20, was the captain of Saurashtra Under-22 side, and he scored a triple ton against Maharashtra U-22 team in the CK Nayudu Trophy. Two years later, Pujara made his Test debut in 2010 and has now played almost twice the Tests that Parthiv has.

3. Virat Kohli

He was still the captain. But of the Under-19 side. Neither did he sport the beard nor did he have the toned body. He was a talented chubby-faced 19-year-old, who could not hit sixes at will. Earlier that year, Kohli led India to a Under-19 World Cup win at Kuala Lumpur. He made his ODI debut 10 days after Parthiv played his that Test. Not a superstar yet, his incredible journey had just begun. He went on to win the World Cup 2011, Champions Trophy 2013 and became the Test captain.

4. Ajinkya Rahane

Rahane had just finished his first First-Class season. He went on to play for India three years later and in 2015 also led the Indian side in a ODI series in Zimbabwe. He is also the vice-captain of Indian Test team.

5. Karun Nair

While Parthiv makes his comeback at Mohali, Nair makes his Test debut. Nair, now the Karnataka captain, was probably in his high secondary as a 16-year-old. In fact, he made his First-Class debut five and half years after the Colombo Test.

6. Ravichandran Ashwin

The Chennai boy, who tops the ranking charts of Test bowlers and all-rounders, was probably in his final year of engineering and had experienced only two seasons of domestic cricket. He had not even made his IPL debut.Despite being bowler first, Ashwin had 191 runs more than Parthiv in his first 20 Tests!

7. Ravindra Jadeja

Jadeja became the second player after Kohli to get the national call up from India s World Cup winning squad of Under-19 World Cup in 2008. Jadeja made his ODI debut in 2009 and Test in 2012 but still has played more games than Parthiv. Jadeja is only one-run short from Parthiv s Test runs tally from 22 matches. In between, he scored three triple-centuries in First-Class cricket and over the years has emerged as one of the best spin bowlers in world cricket.

8. Jayant Yadav

Jayant, then 18, must have been in college. Three-and-half years later he made his First-Class debut aged 21. At the same age Parthiv had played 19 Tests already and 14 ODIs as well.

9. Mohammed Shami

Shami had not even made a switch to Bengal from Uttar Pradesh. It was in 2010 when he made presence in First-Class cricket and appeared for Bengal. Despite making his Test debut 11 years after Parthiv, Shami has played one Test and nine ODIs more than Parthiv.

10. Umesh Yadav

Umesh made his FC debut in the same year, in which Parthiv played his previous Test in 2008. He is now India’s most experienced pacer after Ishant Sharma, who happens to be the only member in the squad who had made his Test debut before Parthiv’s previous Test.
