A unique feat for Nathan Lyon
Nathan Lyon has been Australia’s frontline off-spinner since his inception and Shane Warne’s exclusion from the side. Recently, Lyon also became the most successful Australian off-spinner when he surpassed Hugh Trumble’s record of 141 wickets in Test cricket.
Lyon is now playing his 50th Test match against West Indies in the ongoing Frank Worrell Trophy at Hobart and with this feat he also becomes the first Australian off-spinner to have achieved such milestone.
It may come as a surprise to many but no Australian off-spinner has remained long enough in the Test format. Warne cemented his place into the side for years which deprived any other spinner to remain a mainstay into the side. In 49 Tests so far, Lyon has 172 Test scalps to his name at a decent average of 34.02
At present, Lyon is Australia’s primary spinner and has shouldered the responsibility with perfection. Australia is in a comfortable position at the moment as they are batting at 257 for three on Day 1.
