Arrogance or Strategy? Gautam Gambhir explains surrounding MS Dhoni with fielders

Gautam Gambhir and MS Dhoni go long back. The duo hit headlines for their exploits in Nairobi for India A in 2004. Gambhir was alreadyin the fringes and later that year Dhoni broke into the national side. From thereon, they have been a part of many victorious dressing rooms together. If Dhoni led India to the inaugural ICC World T20 triumph, it was Gambhir’s knock in the final that guided India to the win. The Gambhir-Dhoni stand in the ICC World Cup 2011 final enabled India to lay their hands on cricket’s most coveted trophy for the second time. Now out of the national setup, Gambhir leads Delhi and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). There have been speculated rifts between the two but no confirmation on the same ever happened. Indian Premier League (IPL) has divided the two champion cricketers in different camps and both have been extremely successful.

Dhoni carries the reputation of being one of the most explosive batsmen and on Saturday, when the Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS) skipper came out to bat at 74 for 4, Gambhir surrounded him with fielders, something that we seldom see in T20 cricket.

With the KKR spinners bowling well, Dhoni struggled to 22-ball 8 before rain halted the play. Kudos to Gambhir, he got Dhoni to play the slowest ever knock for any innings of 20-plus balls.

KKR went on to win the rain-marred game quite comfortably and in process climbed to the No.2 spot in the points table. Post-match, Gambhir explained his tactics.

He mentioned that he does not care much of batsmen’s reputation but in fact gives more confidence to his bowlers.

“I have more confidence in the bowlers, always see who the bowler is not the batsman. I have a lot of trust in Piyush [Chawla] and [Sunil] Narine. I did not think it was MS [Dhoni],” said an elated Gambhir.

Was he really not thinking it was MS? But this cannot be a co-incidence as Gambhir has employed the same tactic against Dhoni in the past too. This tweet further explains.

Whatever it is, the tactic did work out and contributed a significant part in KKR’s win by D/L method.
