IPL 2015: Kings XI Punjab beat Rajasthan Royals in a super over, Stars and flops

Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) buttoned up the Rajasthan Royals (RR) winning streak of the tournament with an electrifying super over victory! This was the first super over finish in this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL) of this year’s tournament and a breathtaking one.

After being asked to bat first, RR went all guns blazing when their openers fired. A score of 200 was on the cards, Ajinkya Rahane and Shane Watson once again gave them a convincing start of 95 runs. Steve Smith didn’t get going with the bat, but Karun Nair and Deepak Hooda fueled the run-rate graph with their little cameos. RR set a target of 192 for KXIP to chase.

In reply, KXIP got off to a shaky start and kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Shaun Marsh and David Miller were the stars of the day as they helped their side to secure a tie. The most consistent batsman with plethora of runs for KXIP didn’t get a chance for the first four games and was brought in as a replacement for their skipper George Bailey, who was ruled out with a shoulder injury. He grabbed this opportunity and ensured that he gave them the momentum they needed. He scored 64 off 40 deliveries and played a crucial knock in the super over too. Miller made sure the game never drifted away with his knock of 54 which came off 30 deliveries.

Turning Point: Mitchell Johnson and Axar Patel were at the crease and they needed 14 to win from the last over which was bowled by James Faulkner. The duo managed to score nine from the first five and with five required from the last ball, Patel hit a boundary. That gave them a chance to fight in the Super Over.

Marsh once again excelled in the Super Over hitting three boundaries and taking the score to 15, which RR batsmen couldn’t chase down. RR skipper Watson was bowled in the first ball from Johnson and later Faulkner got run out. In the end, it was two very crucial points for KXIP.
