New Zealand opener smashed his way to the record books in the second one-day international (ODI) against Sri Lanka in Christchurch on Monday when his 30-ball unbeaten 93 crushed a hapless Sri Lankan team. Guptill’s blazing knock, which saw him score fifty of just 17 balls, was laden with nine fours and eight towering sixes.

His knock powered the hosts to a 10-wicket win over the island team, whose worries seem to have no end. Earlier, they were dismissed for 117, as Matt Henry continued his tremendous run, picking yet another four-wicket haul. Sri Lanka could never recover from the early blows and meekly surrendered against the superior New Zealand side.

In reply, Guptill and Tom Latham knocked off the required runs in just 8.2 overs. Guptill, who broke Brendon McCullum’s record of fastest fifty for New Zealand by one ball, just missed the chance to become the fastest ODI centurion by a whisker. South Africa’s ODI skipper AB de Villiers holds the current record with his 31-ball hundred against the West Indies earlier this year.

New Zealand are now ahead by a 2-0 margin in the five-match series, with one more match to go before the New Year. Here’s a look at how the world of Twitter reacted to New Zealand’s massive win and Guptill’s swashbuckling knock.

Martin Guptill said after scoring unbeaten 93 off just 30 balls that he didn’t count the runs, just kept swinging his bat at everything that came his way.
