Zimbabwe isn’t short of talented cricketers but surely of money. Post World Cup 2015, their star cricketer Brendan Taylor had to call a premature retirement from international cricket and head north to England, signing a Kolpak deal. He had to provide for his young family and even being one of the best players in the tournament wasn’t enough to make him earn more than US$250.

Other players continue to suffer similar fate. Left-handed batsman Craig Ervine was the key architect for Zimbabwe’s sensational win over New Zealand in the first One-Day International (ODI) at Harare, on Sunday. His unbeaten 130 from 108-balls, guided Zimbabwe to a seven-wicket victory as they chased down 304. His batting partner — Sean Williams, another left hander congratulated his teammate, who also happens to be his flatmate, for the amazing knock. Here’s what Williams tweeted after the game:

Williams may have done this in jest but the true situation of Zimbabwean cricketers isn’t very different.
