Mike Brearley (a reasonably competent chess player) and Bob Barber were playing chess in the pavilion during a match. The game had to be interrupted at an intriguing state when a wicket fell; Barber had to walk out to bat (perhaps a bit reluctantly) and cricket resumed on the field.

Soon afterwards Barber asked for a change of gloves. Naturally the substitute fielder arrived with an assortment. Barber changed the gloves and asked the fielder to deliver a message to the captain: “Bb5”.
