The first floodlit game in England was played in England between Essex and the touring West Indians on August 14, 1980. The venue was, of all places, Stamford Bridge. Essex’s mobile scoreboard had to be drafted in as a football scoreboard was not equipped enough to handle the complexities of cricket scoring.

Essex stunned the West Indians with a victory on a faster scoring-rate. Two days after the match, Chelsea drew a match with Wrexham on the same ground, with the crowd chanting “we want cricket”.
