When Len Hutton asked Denis Compton if there are ‘easier ways to make a living’!

Not many people got to know that under the relentlessly concentrating batsman, Len Hutton actually had a wonderful sense of humour.

He and Denis Compton were facing a particularly hostile spell from Keith Miller and Ray Lindwall at Lord’s during the 1953 Ashes.

After an over from Lindwall, Hutton called Compton for a word. The stadium saw the captain and his senior batsman discuss tactics. What Hutton actually said was, “We must be mad, Denis. There must be easier ways to make a living than this.”
