It’s definitely an unselfish decision but the timing of it has left many fazed. Hashim Amla on Wednesday stepped down as South Africa’s Test captain. The day marked the end of the second Test against England, which sees South Africa trailing 0-1.

Amla has been facing criticism for his leadership after the side lost 0-3 in India last year. Against England, at Cape Town, Amla smashed a 201 and therefore the decision comes as surprising.

Amla was named South Africa’s Test captain after Graeme Smith retired in 2014. He won in Sri Lanka, and against Zimbabwe and West Indies. The Bangladesh series ended in a draw, as it was rain-affected. However the India series turned out to be a disaster with South Africa being completely outplayed by the hosts. It was South Africa’s first overseas Test series defeat in nine years. To make matters worse, he lost the first Test against England at Durban.

Amla in a statement said, “I was deeply honoured when the position was given to me. Throughout my time as captain, I have always had the support of my teammates and coaching staff. I remain committed to the Proteas across all formats and I will fully support whoever is shown as my successor.”

He continued, “I have chatted to some of the guys in the team so I don’t think it will come as a surprise. AB is very able and a brilliant captain. The decision has been purely based on that I think somebody else can do a better job. It was just something that crossed my mind and was working on my mind. My leadership style, and we have a very young team, maybe somebody else would have done a better job.”

AB de Villiers will take charge for the remaining two Tests against England and is the front-runner for the full time job.
