Australian wicketkeeper and vice-captain Brad Haddin paid rich tributes to MS Dhoni, who announced his retirement from Test cricket on Wednesday.

Haddin said that he was “very surprised” when he came to know about this decision but felt Dhoni left Indian cricket in a better place than it was when he took over. In fact Dhoni’s decision has surprised the cricketing world, with many questioning his timing as the Test series is still not over.

The Australian stumper hailed Dhoni’s “calmness” and called him a “true gentleman of the game.”

Dhoni, who has played 90 Tests for India and led 60 of them, retired from the longest format after he end of the Boxing Day Test. The Indian wicket-keeper played a crucial role in saving the Test and earlier had effected nine dismissals in the match, which is a record for an Indian keeper.

India and Australia play the final Test at Sydney starting January 6. India will be led by Virat Kohli, while Wriddhiman Saha is expected to fill in Dhoni’s place as the wicket-keeper.
