England captain Alastair Cook has been hogging all the limelight of late. At 31, he recently became the youngest man to reach the landmark of 10,000 Test runs. It was no small feat by any means, as he surpassed the master blaster Sachin Tendulkar to set a new record. In doing so, he also became the first Englishman to breach the barrier of 10,000 runs in Tests. Also Read:Â Alastair Cook and the galore of records
At the moment, Cook is soaking up the applauses and wishes that are coming his way. Even though the comparisons with Tendulkar and the talks of Cook surpassing his record of most runs in Tests have begun, Cook remains unperturbed and believes he is still far from the record of the âgenius Tendulkar and does not want to think about it right now.
âSix thousand runs is a long way away,â an AFP report quoted Cook as saying. âIt was set by an incredibly talented genius. Iâm no genius and Tendulkar is, so that is a long way ahead. I want to play for England for as long as I can and at the moment Iâm really enjoying it. I am really motivated and hungry and where that takes me who knows,â Cook further added. Also Read: When Sachin Tendulkar’s bat weight was reduced to 100-300 gms by his bat-maker
Indian batting legend and first man to scale the 10,000-run summit Sunil Gavaskar had recently suggested that with age by his side and given the number of Tests England play, Cook is nicely placed to go past Tendulkarâs record of most runs in Tests. The records are meant only to be broken and Tendulkarâs too shall be broken one day. Whether Cook can do so or will it take someone else to rise up and go past the master, only time can answer.
