‘Original Finisher’ Michael Bevan names the “best finishers” in the modern game

Several factors led to Australia’s rise in dominance in One-Day cricket since 90s. One of them is Michael Bevan. In days when we are witnessing an influx of limited-overs cricket and finishing has become the crucial most component of the game, meet Bevan, the ‘original finisher’, a tag that stuck to him for his innovative ways of pulling off thrillers in Australia’s favour.

Bevan, now a part-time coach, is in India to coach Madurai Super Giants in the inaugural edition of the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL).

During a press conference, Bevan was asked on who does he think is the “best finisher” in the modern game. He named MS Dhoni as one of the best finishers of all-time. He said, “I think the first question is what they call a loaded question because, clearly, you have one of the best finishers of all time in MS Dhoni. Look, he is impressive not just in finishing but just as a player in general. Clearly, he has been an outstanding performer and he’s achieved some outstanding things for Indian cricket.” ALSO READ: Virat Kohli will prove to be a good captain across formats, says MS Dhoni

Bevan, 46, finished with an ODI average of 53.78, went on to name the other extraordinary finishers he has seen. The left-hander’s career was cut short after fellow left-hander Mike Hussey emerged. Hussey not only continued Bevan’s good work but even excelled while batting at the top order. Mr. Cricket as Hussey is fondly called was more of a complete batsman, who also went on to excel in Test cricket.

The guy who took over from me, Mike Hussey, was the version 2.0 or whatever version they’re up to nowadays (laughter). I thought he had an extra cog or extra speed than what I had, so I thought he was pretty amazing and had a really good grasp of how to finish a match,” he added.

Naming two more modern crickets, who usually bat at top order but possess extraordinary ability to finish games, Bevan said, “Virat Kohli or AB de Villiers, they kind of redefine it because they kind of come in early they start and they finish. These types of guys and their performances at the moment are phenomenal, all these guys are in great company.” READ MORE: Photos: Virat Kohli and company catch up with Sir Garry Sobers and other West Indian legends
