Queen Elizabeth II has sent a private message of condolence to the family of Phil Hughes, who died in Sydney on Thursday. Hughes was felled by a bouncer at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Tuesday and was to be rushed to St. Vincent’s hospital.

The Queen conveyed her sympathies to Hughes’s family on Friday night. Even the flags were flying at half-mast at Australia House in central London in tribute to the 25-year old cricketer.

Hughes had a close connection with England and had successful stints with three county sides — Middlesex, Hampshire and Worcestershire — between 2009 and 2012, where he left a lasting impression both on and off the pitch.

Even the MCC flag at Lord’s was lowered on Thursday and flowers have been left outside the home of cricket.
