Itâs a cliché, but the fact canât be ignored that Bollywood and cricket are nothing short of a religion in India. Itâs something, most identify with and both the fraternities also share a cordial friendship. Cricketers have acted in Bollywood films and while the actors play in the annual Twenty20 competition called Celebrity Cricket League (CCL). Cricketers and actors have over the years shared a close bonding and how often we have seen the friendship making headlines and few have also ended in happy tied knots.
The cricketâs most coveted event âICC World Cupâ starts next month and India head in to the tournament as the defending champions. During the occasion of Star Guild Awards, the B-town celebrities took the opportunity to wish the Indian team, âgood luckâ for the colossal event, which will be played in Australia and New Zealand.
Indian limited-overs captain MS Dhoni and his deputy Virat Kohli seemed to be the clear favourites in terms of playerâs popularity.
âItâs one sport where we have done well over the years consistently. We are the defending champions and we should do really well,â said Haider actor Shahid Kapoor, who is a fan of Dhoni.
However, actress Deepika Padukone is disappointed that Yuvraj Singh isnât a part of the 15-man squad. In 2007, when the actress first came in the industry, she was romantically linked with the Indian left-hander.
âI do know he has been performing well in all the Ranji Trophy tournaments and I am also disappointed (at Yuvrajâs exclusion). He is one of the best the country ever had. Having said that, I think we have a great team and have to encourage them,â said Deepika, daughter of Indian badminton legend Prakash Padukone.
Hrithik Roshan wished the team, âAll the best!â
Director Rohit Shetty believes that the team is good and even in the past the country has won the cup twice, but fans shouldnât build unnecessary pressure of winning.
âLet the players go and play to their best of ability and letâs show support to them. Itâs a game, letâs not pressurise the side. Let them play and letâs enjoy it,â said Shetty of Golmaal, Singham and Chennai Express fame.
Actor Sonu Sood echoed Shettyâs views, as he said, âThe team has a good mix of young players and should do well. Itâs all about the effort. Winning and losing is a part of game but if they put in good effort that should do.â
On his favourite player, Sood added, âRight now Virat is doing well but an individual players canât win you a World Cup and itâs a team effort thatâs needed.â
However Randeep Hooda believes that âwe should winâ. He also expressed his disappointment at the non selection of two of his favourite players â Yuvraj and Virender Sehwag.
âOne of my favourite players, Dhoni is there but Sehwag and Yuvraj havenât made it so I am disappointed but what can we do, itâs a sport,â said Hooda.
In the video uploaded by Cricketcountry, we see other B-town celebrities â Varun Dhawan, Kriti Sanon, Imtiaz Ali, Riteish Deshmukh, Lisa Haydon, Mohit Suri, Urvashi Rautela, Jackie Bhagnani, Diya Seth and Prasoon Joshi, speak about their favourite players and wish the team âgood luckâ.
