Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has been named as the next President of Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB). The speculations were rife that he would get the top job and it was only a matter of time before the announcement happened. Ganguly reportedly had the backing of the West Bengal Government, which tilted the decision in his favour. The post had become vacant after Jagmohan Dalmiya's demise on Sunday.

A report by ANI stated that Ganguly met West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today along with Dalmiya's son Avishek, who has been appointed as the joint secretary of CAB.

Ganguly, who had been serving the CAB as the joint-secretary for almost last two years, was seen as the natural choice to replace Dalmiya. His elevation to the top-post thus does not surprise. "I will try and do my best. I'm taking over immediately, since we have a very big role to fill," said Ganguly after his appointment as CAB president. "I am thankful to my colleagues for giving me this responsibility," added Ganguly.

Sourav Ganguly - now the perfect all-rounder!
