Sunil Gavaskar slams Team India’s decision to sacrifice Ajinkya Rahane at No.3

It once seemed that Cheteshwar Pujara has sealed the No.3 position in the Indian Test line-up but his prolonged bad patch made the Indian team experiment. To protect the off-form Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane was asked to bat at No.3 in the second Test at Colombo and he managed only four. [Also Read: Ajinkya Rahane’s world record: How He Achieved It]

Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar criticised the decision and called it a harsh move as Rahane has been very successful at No.5 position. Gavaskar, not happy with the decision, feels that captain Virat Kohli is the best man to bat at No.3.

“It [Rahane batting at No. 3] was sacrificing a good man, a man who will take everything that the team dishes out at him. He is one of those nice guys who can be shoved around. He has been pushed at No. 3 even though he had success batting at No. 5,” Gavaskar, who is commentating in Colombo, told NDTV. Comparing Rahane to his mentor Rahul Dravid, Gavaskar added, “But he will do the job at No. 3 because he is from the Rahul Dravid school of cricket – he will do everything the team asks of him, just the way Dravid did. He is Rahane’s mentor.”

Focusing on the solution, the Little Master said, “If Kohli can push himself to No. 3, the line-up sorts itself out. Rahane at four and Rohit at five is perfect.”

India got off to a disastrous start and were reduced to 12 for two. It was Kohli and opener KL Rahul who stitched a partnership of 174 for the third wicket as India managed 393 runs in the first innings.
