West Indies women’s team lift the World title; celebrates with their male counterparts

Sunday, April 3 was going to be a momentous day for West Indian cricket. For the first time, both their men’s and women’s teams were scheduled to play the ICC World T20 2016 finals. At stake was the historic treble of winning all the major ICC titles in a calendar year, with their Under-19 team having won the U-19 World Cup earlier this year.

The women’s team took the first step towards this landmark by beating Australia by eight wickets in the women’s final at Kolkata. The moment West Indies won the match, their players broke into wild celebrations and ‘Champion’ jigs. The Dwayne Bravo song, which has virtually become the theme song of the West Indian teams in the tournament, was played aloud in the stadium, with the players grooving to its tunes.

The partly only got more happening as some of their male counterparts also joined them in the celebrations. Skipper of West Indies’ men’s team Darren Sammy and his team-mates Carlos Brathwaite and Andre Russell also joined the celebrations and soon there were more hugs and more leg-shakes all around. Even the legendary figure Sir Curtly Ambrose stepped on to the ground to congratulate the women players.

The men’s team, which will take on England in the men’s World T20 final at the same venue in the evening, had just arrived in the stadium and wasted no time in joining the celebrations. The great Caribbean party might well go on till late night and more days to come if the inspired ‘Calypso Kings’, who are on a self-confessed mission, can complete the treble after their female counterparts and U-19 boys showed them the way.
