Top 25 long names in Sri Lankan cricket

Heard this joke about James Bond and Chaminda Vaas?

Travelling on the same flight, Bond and Vaas got a seat next to each other.

Vass to Bond: “Hi, what s your name?

Bond: “I am Bond. James Bond. And you?”

Vaas: “I am Vaas… Chaminda Vaas… Joseph Chaminda Vaas Ushantha Joseph Chaminda Vaas Patabendige Ushantha Joseph Chaminda Vaas Warnakulasuriya Patabendige Ushantha Joseph Chaminda Vaas.”

Bond fainted!

Now most people think Chaminda Vaas has got the longest name among the Sri Lankan cricketers. But that s not true. Gihan Rupasinghe, who played two T20 Internationals for Sri Lanka against New Zealand in 2009 and Akila Dhananjaya, who played one One-Day International (ODI) and five T20Is between 2012-13 both have names with 59 characters, compared to Vaas s 52-character full name. In fact, two other Sri Lankans have longer names than Vaas; Hemantha Wickramaratne and Sachithra Senanayake are the two ahead with 55 and 53 characters respectively to their full names.

There is one Sri Lankan with a seven-word name, but those seven words add up to only 49 characters! There are many players like Rupasinghe and Senanayake who have words repeating in their long names as can be seen from the list below.

Thank God that the scoreboard does not have to show full names of these Sri Lankans, else the scoreboard will start at Premadasa Stadium and end at P Sara Oval!

Below is a list of the 25 longest names among cricketers who represented Sri Lanka:
