Virat Kohli will prove to be a good captain across formats, says MS Dhoni

Team India has had two leaders to steer the ship in different formats for quite some time. After the retirement of MS Dhoni from Tests, the selectors were forced to make this choice of having two different leaders for Tests and shorter formats, with Virat Kohli getting the Test captaincy while Dhoni continuing with the two. But with passing time, the question of when Kohli will get the reins of the team in all formats has gained momentum. There are two reasons to it; one, Kohli has performed exceptionally in the shorter formats in this period and two, India have not had much success under Dhoni. The maverick skipper, who turned 35 recently, also has time running out. Thus, it was only natural of calls for making Kohli the leader across formats to gain momentum.

It, the captaincy for Kohli across formats, will happen when it has to happen. But for now, even Dhoni has suggested that Kohli will make a good captain in all three formats. Showering praises on his deputy, Dhoni said: “Virat has been fantastic over the years; if you see what really counts is how you can improve your game. Right from the very first game that he played for India, he is somebody who always wanted to improve and he always wanted to contribute in the team’s win and by contribution it was not a small, he always wanted to be the Man of the Match in those terms.” ALSO READ: MS Dhoni’s tips to fan on how to remain ‘calm and cool’ during exams.

Dhoni, while talking to the Tamil Nadu T20 Premier League (TNPL’s) official website, further added: “So I feel that he was always pushing himself — when it comes to fitness, reading of the game, execution of his plans — I feel that’s what makes him very special. After that, it’s how you lead your team and since he has the experience of leading RCB (Royal Challengers Bangalore) and also now that he is the Test captain for the more than a year, I feel in a way he has groomed himself looking at all the challenges that he had to face.”

“I feel that he has done an exceptional job and that he has a very bright future ahead of him when it comes to being the captain of the teams,” concluded the wicket-keeper batsman, who will be next seen leading India against the West Indies in a two-match T20I series to be played in USA on August 27 and 28.
