Viv Richards happy to see Brendon McCullum surpass his record
New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum made the headlines in his farewell Test when he scored the fastest century in this format of the game during the ongoing match against Australia at Christchurch. This is also his 101st Test appearance on a trot since debut, which is also a world record and a marvellous one.
McCullum played a belligerent knock in the first innings and scored a scintillating century in just 54 deliveries and overhauled the previous record which was jointly held by Viv Richards and Misbah-ul-Haq in 56 deliveries. McCullum guided his team to a safe total of 370 runs in the first innings and was praised by many cricketing greats on achieving this feat, in fact, both the previous record holders appreciated him on this occasion.
West Indies legend Richards expressed his gratitude as he was happy to see McCullum breaking his record. According to a post on Twitter by Saj Sadiq, Richards was quoted saying, “If there was going to be an individual who I would have liked to have broken my record it would have been McCullum”
Going by another tweet from Sadiq, Richards further spoke about Misbah and highlighted McCullum’s performance and added, “56 ball hundred was a marvellous achievement by Misbah. Now we are tied 2nd so you can never forget what Brendon has achieved”
Misbah too spoke about the probability of his record being broken and had McCullum in his list. In another Tweet from Sadiq, Misbah quipped, “When I equalled the record I thought that one day Warner, McCullum or de Villiers would some day break this record”
Misbah was happy to see McCullum holding the current record as he has been aggressive in his approach and has been instrumental behind the evolution of New Zealand cricket. Sadiq posted another tweet with Misbah saying, “I’m really happy for Brendon. He deserves the record. The way he’s played has changed the whole approach of the NZ team”
McCullum is inarguably one of the greats to have featured the game and his services will be dearly missed. Australia at present are in a good position as they now trail by just seven runs in the first innings with six wickets in hand at stumps on Day 2. McCullum will have a task in hand in second innings too, as of now he has scripted history and the world is cherishing his knock.
