Wasim Jaffer becomes the first cricketer to amass 10,000 runs in Ranji Trophy: Twitter reactions

Exactly 19 years and three days prior to this day, an 18-year-old Wasim Jaffer smacked an unbeaten 314, and mind you it was just his second First-Class game. Jaffer, who over the years has been a special player for Mumbai, now is the captain of Vidarbha and at 37 is still not well. November 6, 1996 to November 8, 2015, the journey has been incredible. On Sunday, he became the first player in the history of Ranji Trophy to score 10,000 runs.

The milestone came at Jadavpur University ground at Salt Lake, against the home team Bengal and Jaffer got to the milestone after he elegantly drove pacer Veer Pratap Singh. It was a special moment, as Jaffer became the first cricketer in the tournament’s 81-year-old history to get to the five-figure mark.

Despite a prolific domestic career Jaffer couldn’t really make it big at the international level. He played 34 Tests for India and scored 1944 runs at 34.10, which is way too less than his First-Class average of 50.08. Jaffer was dismissed for 26 on Sunday with Vidarbha struggling but post the marathon land-mark, he spoke to PTI.

“It’s a big moment for me to score 10000 runs in one of the oldest and elite tournaments. “I always had the passion in me to play cricket. It’s never easy to play for so many years. I always had the belief in myself. It’s passion which keeps me going,” said Jaffer.
