Watch Liam Plunkett’s SIX; Cricket fraternity hail the England-Sri Lanka ODI nail biter

There is a lot of debate over the future of One-Day Internationals (ODI) thanks to the growing popularity of Twenty20 (T20). The India-Zimbabwe ODI series was boring and completely one-sided. Even ICC are losing sleep over devising methods to ensure that the 50-over format remains. Amidst all this, England and Sri Lanka were involved in a nail-biter, which ended with a tie.

Sri Lanka locked horns with England in the first ODI. Having lost the Test series 0-2, Lankans had a lot of pride at stake and the fact is that they have a good record in England. Struggling at 56 for 3 in the ninth over, Sri Lanka came back well to post 286. Skipper Angelo Mathews led the recovery with a steady 73, while Seekkuge Prasanna’s 28-ball 59 provided the needed impetus.

England found themselves reeling at 72 for 6 in the 16th over. A defeat hovered but a 138-run stand between Jos Buttler and Chris Woakes for the seventh wicket got them back. Buttler scored 93 while Woakes remained not out on 95. England needed 14 from the final over and Nuwan Pradeep displayed exceptional death bowling skills to restrict them to six from the first four balls. Woakes managed a three from the fifth ball and with seven to win from the final ball, Liam Plunkett struck a meaty six to tie the game.

Many from the cricket fraternity took to Twitter to express their excitement on the close contest. We present you with some of them:
