Jack Crapp, Gloucestershire’s first professional captain who had also played seven Tests for England, was once supposed to be sharing room with Alec Bedser — though some stories mention it was Alec’s twin brother Eric. As he reached the reception, he was asked (before he could ask for the keys) “Bed, sir?”
Crapp, under the impression that the receptionist had mistaken him as his roommate, responded: “No, Crapp.”
He was duly directed to the first door on the right on the ground floor.
