Why ‘Azhar’ flopped? Here is what actress Prachi Desai has to say
Despite all the promotion and build-up, Mohammad Azharuddin’s biopic ‘Azhar’ did not do well at the box office. Actress Prachi Desai essayed the role of Azhar’s first wife Naureen while the role of the tainted cricketer was played by Emraan Hashmi.
Azharuddin was implicated in match-fixing scandal in 2000 and according to Prachi, fans have not yet forgiven him. BCCI had banned the cricketer for life but in 2012, the Andhra Pradesh High Court lifted the ban, describing it “unsustainable”. ALSO READ: 11 facts you should know about Mohammad Azharuddin
Prachi reasoned out why the movie did not go on to be a hit.
“There are things which are beyond our control. You should make peace with it. I feel people were a bit unforgiving towards Azhar, despite the court giving him a clean chit in the matter,” said Prachi in a report from PTI. The 27-year-old actress further added, “For a lot of people, cricket is huge. They used to watch and follow him but something fell apart when the controversy happened. Some people took it to their heart. Some could not watch the film for what it is without their personal views and attachments. They decided before watching the film that they knew the story.”
Prachi, however was happy with the positive feedback she got for the role and revealed that it was very tough to play a real life character. The Tony D’Souza-directed movie is now ready for its television premiere and Prachi hopes the film to do well on small screen.
